Is Spam Score Important?

Hi everyone,

I have been holding onto a domain name that I found 2 years ago and which I deemed to be a good domain at that time, and I held onto it without doing anything with it. And soon it will be up for renewal and I need to decide once and for all if I'm going to use it or let it expire, but before I make this decision I need to know how important MOZ's Spam Score metric is because at the moment that's the only bad stat (coloured in red) that shows up for this domain when I check it with... THIS URL

Can I get your honest opinion on this metric (spam score)? Is it such a deterrent to using domains that otherwise look good? Please let me know if it's not too big of a hassle. Pretty please

I have no content yet. It's just the domain itself with nothing on it. And if I'm gonna use it I was definitely going to put god content on it

Spam score can be changed even by third parties sometimes. You can make sure that you are staying ahead of the game by adding quality content regulary and following white hat techiniques to reduce the spam score.

And yes it is important and it is your responsibility to maintain it.

my domain has 61 SS, just 1% above the average limit LOL. Anyway, apparently SS is not THAT important as I first freaked out about and the best part is that it can be lowered. Cool!

OK fellas, thanks for your inputs. I have made my decision (I'm keeping the domain). This thread can be closed now if anyone wishes to close it. I have no need for it anymore

Can anyone actually tell you just how much impact does it have? no, but it is a factor.
just like 200 other factors which google take into account and other variables which we will never know about.
And the ranking system of each factor in the formula is changing in every google update.

I knew it was an important ranking factor, I just didn't know how important it was. Well, I still don't know how important it is but I'll out after I rank the domain... if I ever do that

SS is about quality of backlinks and google has always taken this into account, so I don't agree with you

we are all aware of the "big" factors google take into consideration, quality content, backlinks from respected sites and preferably within the same niche, mobile support etc.. etc..
but none of us really know just how much weight does each factor get, and most importantly just how much will each of them get in future updates.

so while I would obviously put much effort into what's already known as "big" factors", I wouldn't totally neglect the rest, just so I won't get caught completely off guard on the next update.

just because google doesn't give weight to some factor currently.. doesn't mean it doesn’t count or won't get more significant in the future,
it's still there.

you make good points, but... if I were to dance to google's every whim and care about all of the factors that they take into account I'd do nothing all day long but make plans on how to please google ... nah, I'm sticking to the most important factors that are known to work (except for money cause I have very little) and will try to make use of those as best as I can. I am sure that there's a parallel universe, in which Moz and its creations are still relevant. However, it definitely isn't this one.

Whatever Moz produces is utter shit. Their crawlers are pathetic compared to Ahrefs of Majestic, so even if their metric algorithms were actually in any way accurate (which they absolutely aren't), they wouldn't catch most of the backlinks anyway.

I tend to agree with you cause after reading the replies here I decided to check the backlinks manually and even though there aren't many they aren't too bad either. They are weird (several whois sites, some meaningless search engines, some link directories, and about 50% of them from niche-relevant sites. Not big ones, but still very relevant. And there's also some bad backlinks from crappy article directories by the looks)... So anyway, all in all they're not ultra high quality backlinks but at least they're not pharma / gambling / porn / asian sites, either. Which I'm ok with

Your average scraped domain basically. Nothing wrong with that, but not much firepower in it either. Make sure the history is clean.

Well, I haven't told you anything new really. But always check the history properly. Scraping domains is borderline impossible these days. Everything has been raped at least twice at this point.
