Posting your backlink in existing articles? Worth it?

So, I have been looking for services which brings traffic or most-likely better metrics for our websites. I have wasted a lot of money on having guest posts for my website. But in the end, sites with spammy nofollow links (mostly comments with tons of other sites on them) have better search engine results than mine. I am mostly doing ******** seo for my site. Since, I was paying $300 or $400 per post on sites like hackernoon and likewise publications I turned to some thing else.

I found a source where they have tons of real sites. These sites have better metrics and are real sites. They may have been hacked or whatever, I am not sure. But the source takes $5 or $10 per link. They slip your backlink into an existing and indexed article for that fee. The average DR (Ahrefs) is 60-70 and the PR is 10-15 for each link. I have seen some improvements in results so far. Since these are too cheaper, I would want to buy more. I just have two questions.

1. Is there any specific penalty anyone has come across for putting backlinks in older or already indexed pages?
2. Is it safe to be doing this on a consistent basis with having guest posts to go with them?

Because the 'source' (your article) that they would use, is still nowhere to be found on the internet unless you have got a direct link. That's why I find this sketchy and try to avoid it as much as possible.

I am only getting like 5-10 links a week. I intend to increase that to 20 links a week. What's amazing is that these sites have real traffic and their backlinks profile indicate links from high-quality publications. These sites belong to organizations, news agencies, entertainment and other niches. Which are perfect for a versatile profile.

I have spent almost $50,000 on guest posts, it got me good results but I couldn't sustain my organic results and it went on a decline after a peak. Now, I am doing blog posts and using my source to put backlinks on some of their indexed pages to different pages of our site. I hope it's worth it.

I'd disagree.

At the end of the day, it's about whether it works or not and I'm yet to see any info that suggests it doesn't or that it will get you penalized by Google.

Plus, getting article link inserts is the best way to get cheap and easy contextual backlinks via outreach.

Every "whitehat" SEO course tells people to outreach to blogs that might link to you when you have a new post. So I think it's nothing out of the ordinary for people to put links to new posts into their old ones...

People update old content all the time. I find these to be most effective if you actually update old piece of content with new and add link there. Not simply insert it into old one.

There are definitely no specific penalties for having a referring page or domain that is older than your own. Google itself recommends content creators revise & update their old content, it's only natural that revised content would include newer links to go with newer information - why would that be penalised?

As with link building in general, it is always best to diversify the type of links you get - but it definitely isn't unsafe if your link building is slightly skewed to niche edits/curated links.

And really not a long term plan with those types of links and you can't control the link neighborhood too.

Trouble for what? It doesn't concern me how the links come because I didn't hack the sites if they were hacked haha. I just care for the service that gets me one link in an article for $5 or $10 whereas the overpriced guest posts didn't help sustain my rankings. I am still amazed how my competitors rank with spammy comments and I don't rank consistent with my quality guest posts on high DR and PR publications.

I still have a question that is unanswered. Should I get some nofollow links for my link diversity?

Nofollow ratio can be achieved from other sources. I would not use guest posts or niche edits for this.
