Google releasing a large update today

Here is a copy-paste from the last newsletter from FE International (highly recommended, IMHO):

"The New Head of Google Search will be Prabhakar Raghavan, the current head of Google Ads. Product teams are usually separated at Google, and Raghavan will be retaining control of Google Ads, this is being seen by many as a worrying departure from normal procedure. The goals of Google Ads and Google Search are contradictory, as Google Ads aims to drive as much revenue as possible by selling greater search visibility to their customers. Search Optimization, on the other hand, can provide this visibility for free. Google Ads' interest in gaining more dominance over search results, and providing more space for advertisers, is also seen as contradictory to Google Search's aim of providing the best user experience possible."

For short - everything happens with a reason. Does anybody still think that they are going to roll back the update? Not even when the hell freezes over ;)

Thats not a good sign at all. What about earlier core updates? Did nobody recover from them either?
In my case, I was hit in January, recovered in April and then went on a full descent since the beginning of May. I was not hit by any other core updates.

There is a very pessimistic group there. For google it is very important for people to find what they are really looking for, and not just youtube videos, pinterest and things like that. Because that would lead google to bankruptcy, since people would stop using google search. That last update even my mother who doesn't understand anything said that google was crazy, because she searched for "Oração de são cipriano para separar casal" and only pinterest appeared.

It doesn't justify this group to think that google is fucking everyone and throwing it down. In the 2019 update I fell cool, months later I tripled the accesses. Now it fell relatively little in this May update and I believe that it won't be another 3 months and everything will be leveraged again.

We cannot deny that this update is really weird and full of flaws. But that is no reason to be unmotivated by fantasizing a thousand senseless things out of sheer pessimism.

If you do blackhat SEO you can be sure that sooner or later you will definitely fall. The few who support themselves first, even if they are Blackhat, are by sheer luck. Because google is refining its algorithm more and more to take down this gang that does a lot of wrong things and just because it buys well-written articles do you think it has reason to keep putting batteries and saying that google is lost.

Summing up:

If you REALLY have a website with purposes, that does the right things, that doesn't keep backlinking here and there (comments, forums, public profiles), buying links or exchanging. If you fit in all of this, you can rest assured that even if your site has fallen in this update and even lost to bad sites, it will recover.

But if you are only looking for money, you are really lost. Because these people have infinite blogs and superficial sites, with content bought and poorly reviewed, with artificial links everywhere, with the behavior and attitude of those who are only interested in money, and not in the content they want to transmit to users. These will fall sooner or later and definitely.

There is no reason to say that many sites in this condition are going up and claiming better sites. This is just errors and structural failures of the algorithm. As you lapidate the good sites come back up, and the bad ones disappear into the abyss.

There is no reason for unfounded fears. If you do everything right and have purposes just hope that things will turn for the better.

Yeah, yeah, your post shows that there are still people who believe that world is a place with rainbows and unicorns running among flowers, and when you really really want and are a good person you will succeed and you don't need to worry about anything. How sweet.
Let me tell you something - this is a nasty world. You can wear the whitest of the whites hat and still be struck down to oblivion by Google like they did now and in the past. There is no guarantee that your site will survive, NONE.
Btw, I would like to recommend to all of people so concerned about being blackhat, to look at the name of this site, where we all discuss. LOL.

I'm brazilian too. The result for that search query (from your mother) is horrendous. All the results are pinterest leading to broken links/blocked by spam (did you notice this ?)

If the results really delivered the search intent I would accept as google favoring it's partners, but ALL three are broken and 100% useless.

Even more, the third result is an RUSSIAN version of - you guess it - pinterest.

This leads me to change a little about the mentality of the update, because google seems, for the time being and for some queries, is not considering the user signals, like bounce rate, time on site, otherwise it would never show this broken result.

This, and a lot of complaints about google books and pinterest, might show a genuine bug.

just a question

By 100% whitehat, do you mean that the site doesn't contain sites like web 2.0s? like no Blogspot, typepad and strikingly sites?

and for those who are hit (I know almost all of you in this forum) how's your backlink profile? have you had those web 2.0s direct to your money site?

if not, does your main links have links to those sites as well (tier 2s or 3s)?

and for those with spammy backlinks, are the ones linking back to them are sites that don't have any backlinks at all?

By 100%, I mean I have not built any links, all came naturally, there was no outreach for sponsored links, no 'artificial' means of ranking above my competitors. Simply good content.

oh and it got hit? wow that's sad! but have you had a chance to inspect the backlink profile of those who linked back to you?

I might have a hypothesis regarding on what's happening now with the core update.

100% white hat, in my case = the most affected site that I own have 100% natural backlinks of people linking to my site because they want to do so. Not a single guest posting link or something like that...

And if you find a possible other causes, you will find 10 cases showing the opposite.

There are some really good natural backlinks, but there are thousands that come from various seemingly benign websites. I have always let Google deal with any spam.
You're thinking about negative SEO, aren't you?

is that the right term?

Well I just noticed that those who got hit hard had 2.0s going to their site, mainly Blogspot 2.0s

while those who don't have much or no 2.0s at all, I've seen there backlinks' backlink and have those 2.0s like a lot of them.

while those who are winning have spam, low DR websites linking on their backlinks. No 2.0s

I just made a scan of 20 websites, 10 winners and 10 losers... that's what I noticed

and also, I tried to create a Blogspot backlink to my client's site, it was tanking until I removed it, and rankings are rising. my client's website only has 17 backlinks and it came natural as well.

Saw the backlinks of those who are backlinking to his site, there are little to no 2.0s too.

idk, but maybe I'm just guessing and so frustrated about what's happening.

Negative SEO refers to a competitor that builds harmful backlinks towards your website in the hopes that Google will either penalize you or you will drop in SERP.
I just checked my backlinks with ahrefs and I see nothing out of the ordinary, barely any spam, no blogspot backlinks. Perhaps others have a different experience?

If it’s real, it’s completely clear. Unfortunately.

Yes. And that example was just one of many similar ones. The first result returns a pin with an unavailable video. This does not make any sense and it is very evident that there are many errors and flaws in this update. There are many keywords that are in the same condition, returning meaningless and 100% useless things.

I even tried to look for a topic in a well-known forum and I didn't find it, even looking for exactly how they are published and mentioned the domain name.

I am curios about how the Discover section on your websites looks like. Did it fall flat somewhere at the beginning of May and has it recovered? Google says that it's a bug, but was it fixed for anyone. I mean it's been almost two months..

Google said that? Could you please share the link?
