What is the logic behind interlinking same post?

I've seen a 4 months old site rank for a competitive keyword without considerable backlinks. It has only 16 articles without any interlinking between the posts. But there are multiple links to the same post within the content. The content quality is decent but nothing extraordinary. Ahrefs & SEO Spyglass are showing 0 backlinks. I wonder if linking back to same post is improving SEO.

It's not regular interlinking. They're linking the same post within that post.

1. how many times it was linking back to the same post? twice? thrice?
2. when linking back to the same post was the keyword/s the same or different?
3. were all those 16 articles linking back to the same post?
4. what's ranking on google? is it the domain url or the exact post url?

The post was linked 3-4 times within the article with multiple keywords. Only 7-8 articles were linking back to same post, others don't have links and they didn't rank. The exact post url was ranking in top 10 for 3 articles.

In addition, there are tags at the end of the article. So, the author has linked the post back to target keywords within the article, and added additional keywords as tags at the end of the article.

I think theres no solid reason as to why people interlink the same post in a post (if that makes sense)

Maybe it's to create a loop of link juice flowing within the same page ..

Interlinking is always recommend, also they maybe using pbns

In addition, there are tags at the end of the article. So, the author has linked the post back to target keywords within the article, and added additional keywords as tags at the end of the article.

It makes no sense and every crawler is prepared for this, otherwise they'd be stuck in an infinite loop (recursion). Maybe they're cloaking the real urls?

They're ranking because of hidden links/PBNs. The PageRank algorithm ignores self-loops since it was first released.

Linking to the same post multiple times may have little to no SEO benefit. As kn1ves said it's probably because of PBN links that were hidden. But in my opinion it can also be because of relevant niche-edit backlinks.

Mybe those are "anchor links", linking to a specific section in the same site, for example a table of content or similar or like a FAQs section where you link to a question that's below and a "click to go to the top" kind of links.

In a way, it's interlinking, making your page relevant to those anchors like https://google.com/#keyword-goes-here-yay
