Does your blog have to focus on a specific niche?

The title says it all.

I have a blog that has a bit of everything - football, philosophy, life, etc.

Can I still gain authority on this website or is it too unspecific?

Very hard to get significant succes with that type of blog.
If you are doing it as a hobby and enjoy it, then sure go for it
If you want to make money (which you probably do since you are on BHW) then definitely not recommended. Focus on one topic (football or philosophy or any other interest you have)

It is not a very good idea to blog about anything and everything that comes in your mind. What will you call that blog? What will be its identity. You may be a jack of all trades and master of none BUT there has to be some mastery in some kind of skill isn't it? You can never attain authority blog status with such a diverse mix of topics in one blog.

I will suggest you to start blogging about one particular topic/niche , scale it up gradually and then when you have sufficient readership base then you can expand into "allied" areas. For example if you want to blog about sports, you may gradually branch out into blog posts about sports and fitness, sports equipment, sports medicine etc etc BUT then how will you relate philosophy with sports. I dint quite understand that. Hope you get what I mean.

You get pretty much no authority for obvious reasons.
Google will always prefer a website that is only about coffee instead of one about coffee, meditation, rap music, swiss cheese and ballet.
Because that other person is more focused on one topic, they are considered an expert because they niched down.
It is also very confusing to viewers so UX (user experience) is bad and so i time on page, which are bad signals for google.

So definitely start off with one topic and one site only. It is hard enough already, trust me

It depends on your goal, if you are looking to reap any sort of short to medium term benefit this blog will get you nowhere, however, if you have a long term plan to build your blog into a massive information platform with thousands of posts and balckinks where monetization can be done through the sheer volume of traffic you get, then it may work. Needles to say, this last scenario would involve a titanic amount of work and money to make it feasible.

Bottom-line, the best way to achieve faster results is to keep a narrow focus that allows you to tackle specific niche both in terms of traffic generation and monetization.

If you choose a domain name that is somewhat niche related but broad you can always expend later.

For example if you do bestonlinegames.com and only do Nintendo switch you can always move on to PC or PS4 gaming later.
If you do "mariokartnintendoswitch.com" you can't go to other games and consoles if you understand what I mean.

Definitely make sure you are interested in the topic enough to write for 6 months without seeing results because the grind is very though and demotivating (but it is worth it in the end!)
Also: check niche competition and monthly searches.
You can't outrank thewirecutter,forbes,wallstreetjournal,..... but you can outrank ben'shobbyblog.com and mylittlewebsite.com if they low DA and backlinks.

This also depends on your budget but I would recommend you niche down to a very small subniche (for example red electric guitars and later moving on to guitars in general when you have more domain authority and traffic.)
For this example you can use a domain like guitarworld.com (choose something short, brandable and easy to remember and spell)

Haha I would like to do the "big blog with thousands of posts and backlink" scenario but I do not have a budget or ability, so I will stick to your other tip of one niche road.

If you want to make it as a money site, Instead of concentrate on different subject Better to concentrate on specific niche, and gain your audience first with good quality content. And then enlarge your site.

Unless you are an authority , you cannot succeed with blogs with multiple topics on it. if you have huge followers then they will bring traffic to it but it's better to select a specific niche and focus on it. You can always create different niche specific blogs or websites.

A multi-niche blog is a bad idea nowadays. People want to follow a blog that suits their interests. If I'm interested in smartphones and I discovered your blog, and then I saw your other articles about baseball then I won't follow your blog because I'm not the least interested in baseball. Your bounce rates will be extremely high. Multi-niche blogs used to be successful 10 years ago or so. Big sites like About.com was like that. Then Google dropped the hammer on them. Now you see sites like Hubpages having a network of sites that focus on specific niches.
