Another thing to note, i ALWAYS BID MORE than the average bid price. Clients usually lowball and understand that quality comes at a price. For a $10k project I'd quote $13k. Matter of fact, that's how I got my main client and he's invested in apps, websites, and even wanted to open a physical business with me.

You also have to keep in mind that you're going to be sending a LOT of proposals and get not much return. My conversion rate was 1%, but that 1% made me enough $ for a while.

Found client on Upwork last year with a blank account. I'm still working for the same client, 2 hours a day and I earned about 12000$ total from this client. You don't need to have a lot of previous clients to get a new job, you have to persuade that client to hire you among 30 other people. Your proposal has to be different and unique, don't use some templates from Google. Competition is huge but still, you can succeed.
 
Honestly there isn't much, to it. The competition is incredibly fierce I mean really intense. Whenever I apply for a job within a hours there are 10 30 people submitting their proposals. I've managed to secure a clients. The whole competitive nature of it doesn't suit my preferences or align, with what I want to do. That's why I haven't been using it personally since autumn. If you're looking to grow your account you'll have to be willing to work for rates in the few weeks or even months until you start building up a solid reputation.
