Ad Operations/Media Buying is what I do for a living.
Some basic pointers:
- Rotate and make new creatives every other day to minimize banner blindness.
- Use a good tracker such as Voluum or Binom to identify good placements and offers.
- Have a big budget (be willing to spend atleast 50$ per day on advertising and testing alone) if you wanna compete with the big fish on Taboola.
- Get a fast webhoster/consider a CDN Setup to maximize ROI and Profits.
- Don't rely on one single traffic source, test others as well (Outbrain for example, if you are promoting native ads)
You're right, but here're some additional points:
You can't affect banner blindness by changing creatives. Of course, some creatives perform better than the others -
this is a matter of testing, same on any other platform. You don't have to change banners often, I run the same banners for over 6-12 months and there is no
blindness.
You don't always compete with a
big fish on Taboola, but this platform technically works differently than FB, for example. The larger budget is needed for the campaign to get the results, even if there is no competition, it's just how it works.
You can be just fine with Taboola alone. It's a matter of choice Taboola, Outbrain, or a similar network, if your campaign is running fine, I don't see any reason to spread budget.
