They are good for indexing and showing some social proof for people who land on your page. Not good as a ranking factor. Google has said that they do see them but won't consider them as a ranking factor because it relies on external data google has no control over (has no control is the keyword here). Today it may show thousands of likes/shares and the next day google may be cut off from it (it did happen in the past) and it may negatively impact their ranking system. It tells you that the most important ranking factors are factors google has control over, social signals are not.

TBH they do in fact impact SEO, not directly with Google but definitely indirectly, and they absolutely do with Bing and therefore Yahoo and DuckDuckGo.
Google says that social signals are not "necessarily a factor" within their algorithm. However, site activity and external brand mentions absolutely are. Therefore, although they may not explicit rating Factor in and of themselves, one of the side effects of the social signals would be and improved ranking in Google search.
Bing on the other hand explicitly states that social signals are is significant ranking Factor with them. Bing search also powers Yahoo and DuckDuckGo. Granted collectively, they account for maybe 10 to 15% I've searched, but if you consider how many searches are conducted each day worldwide, that's nothing to dismiss so quickly, especially considering your competitors most likely are not optimizing for those particular search engines.
Even if you're part of the camp is still believes the Google has no interest in Social signals and doesn't necessarily believe that they ultimately result in a better ranking (which by the way they do) consider this:
You will never be punished or penalized by Google for having social signals, that just doesn't exist
So, if it:
A) Benefits you in other search engines
B) More likely than not benefits you in Google search
C) There are no potential negative side effects ( unless you're buying fake ones, in which case your social media profile might get penalized by the platform but not Google)
then by all means get as many as you can - but the right way

True, but you won't be rewarded for social signals either. It may work for other search engines, it won't fly with Google.

As I said earlier, you will absolutely be rewarded for Social signals in Google.
Social signals equal traffic, if they are genuine social signals. This is a known ranking Factor
Social signals equal brand mentions. This is a no drinking Factor as well. Google likes friends, and it considers brand mentions also known as citations as a vote of confidence for the site.
Therefore, even though there may not be a direct algorithm ranking Factor designated for social signals, the byproduct of having social signals, whether intended or not, is increased Google ranking.
Therefore, you absolutely do benefit in Google from having social signals, Google it's just notoriously Less Direct and transparent in their ranking factors and methodology then the other search engines happen to be.
A side note in interesting fact, Bing actually rolled out BERT before Google famously did, which should tell you that their methodologies are rather similar
NOT in terms of SEO and ranking. Like I've said above social ranking depends on external data google has no control over, they did a test some time ago and abruptly for no apparent reason they were cut off, this is exactly why external data google has no control over doesn't matter in terms of ranking. Sure they will show you a tweeter feed if you google a name + tweeter handle name, if that's what you after go for it but in terms of a ranking factor, it's useless.

You're failing to see the big picture. You have to learn to think outside of the box, especially dealing with Google and their mealy-mouthed bullshit.
Because of what social signals inherently do, which DO in fact contribute to ranking and are in fact ranking factors such as traffic engagement mentions all of which Google clearly states are part of the algorithm, they therefore do Boost ranking.

I don't, the thing you're not getting is that google will NEVER rely on an external data they have no control over as a major ranking factor, that's the big picture you're failing to see. Like I said before, they've been there, they've done that, they've been cut off at one point for no apparent reason, and it messed up their ranking. Sure it'll work if you google a name + Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Reddit, Medium, and so on but if at any point google doesn't have access to that data your ranking is gone with the wind and replaced with what google thinks is right. Right now it does rank for some keywords but it's not a major ranking factor.

Although it doesn't have any weightage on ranking, social signals cannot be ignored in terms of branding. No popular brand is still functional without active social media accounts.

Backlinks sure are an external factor which in a lot of cases are more easy to manipulate than social signals. Social signals are worth at least as much as nofollow links (which is considerable) up to a lot more depending on the specific case.

What you don't understand is that although they are not a named Factor, what ultimately results from social signals, undeniably directly influence Google ranking therefore yes they do impact your ranking plain and simple there's no two ways about it

Forgot to mention, I would think this would be a no-brainer but might be worth making crystal clear:
Social signals with ENGAGEMENTS will improve your ranking without a doubt 100%. And yes, they can definitely tell the difference. If 50000 zombie accounts randomly share tweet or post Etc your link, and not one person interacts with any of those posts, of course they're not going to count for s*** because they're obviously fake...
If a number of those posts and tweets Etc end up getting liked, shared, retweeted, reblogged, upvoted etc or your site name or brand end up #'d a few times, or you end up getting your Facebook Twitter or any other social profile that is linked to your site mentioned in the format "@yourhandle" that can have a profound effect
