After demonetized, got approved again!

Back in late september I was demonetized for "reused content".
I uploaded new videos 100% fully my own content (about 4 more) and then re-applied in late October
and still got rejected.

This time I barely made any videos or any changes except one thing I did. I went to a couple of my videos that had the most views or late and the ones I knew (guesswork) that had a lot of reused content
and I simply changed the status of the videos from "public to private". Instead of deleting them which I think could hurt your channel (from what I've read), I just turned them into private. I applied again just 3 days ago and I got approved today!

So there's a tip for you. Turn your videos that have reused content into private and it should help clean up your account. Now that I'm monetized again, I can clearly see in the new layout the option to choose monetization on or off for each video. I'm going to bring those private videos back into public status but turn off monetization and hopefully won't get me de-monetized again but still allow my channel to get lots of views and traction. We'll see!

No problem! I'm currently trying to figure out the purpose of why there is an option to turn monetization "on" or "off" on each video. It's a nice option to have, but I wonder what is the purpose of it because if you are monetized you would want every video to be monetized unless........ this is for protection of your account and the videos that are 100% legit to be monetized, while the videos that are mostly reused content like compliations/mashups/re-edits can still be uploaded and viewed but turning off monetization for it will not get you in trouble with reused content demonetization.

i think your theory got one hole.... the yt staff who approve the channels can look into your private videos easily.. because they have to check those 4k hours coming from where? and are those valid videos for advertisers or not.. so i would say you got lucky....

yes, this is also a possibility. I thought to myself that it's very possible that each time I get demontized and then re-monetized is happening from different human reviewers and someone had a bad day and was being a dick and another person another day was very kind or lenient, etc.... there is no real line. I think it mostly depends on what apple you get and who is in what mood at what time.

So here's the thing, I have old music videos from 7-10 years ago I made on my yt channel that have 500k views on average but obviously they are all copyrighted and never could be monetized. Most my channel views and subscribers most likely came from those videos. But I was still approved the first time for YT partnership and monetization back in 2018. I got demonetized in Feb or Mar and I made some changes (deleted some copyrighted videos) and reapplied and got approved again the next month.

So I've always had these copyrighted videos but it hasn't affected me getting approved or not. So I doubt that's what it is. I was doing really well from May - Sep increasing revenue each month but the videos I had made must have had high reused content in someone's opinion and got demonetized in Sept. I left those videos untouched but just made new videos from scratch fully my own content and didn't get approved in November. Now I put the videos on private and applied for December and got approved.

I'm just going on trial and error and clearly it seems that I either got LUCKY or putting those videos on private (basically removing them from public view without deleting it) did help.

Obviously, I'm aware demonetization can happen again anytime. But each time, I will be learning from it and figuring out exactly what works and doesn't. My main question now is why do they have that option to turn monetization on and off for each video? It's making me think that it's there for those who want to upload reused content videos they made BUT don't want to monetize it so it shouldn't get your entire channel demonetized for the videos that are 100% fully legit and monetizable if that makes sense.

However, according to YouTube (Sep. 2019) - "If you want to apply for the YouTube Partner Program, you can only start the application process when you reach our threshold of 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 valid public watch hours over the last 12 months."
That said, it is pertinent to note that YouTube only cares about your "PUBLIC VIDEOS".. So, should they analyse the source of your 4k hours, they look at your public videos.
Hope you understand it now.

Good to hear that. If the interpretation of that is correct, then it looks like what I did was the right thing and does work to clean up your account to get it approve for monetization again. I put them back on though as public now but set monetization to off. So the new question is, will that keep my account safe or will put me back into demonitized state even though I set monetization off? Hmm...

Yes, you should try it. The problem with all this is that Youtube doesn't specifically tell us what the problem is when it comes to reused content. Copyright is easy. They tell you if it's copyrighted or not and even tell you what video and from what times.

But reused content is a PITA. They don't tell you which videos had reused content, they don't tell you where in the video is considered reused content. So you have to do all the guesswork and that's why nobody has any specific answers because nobody knows. Based on the research I have done, it sounds like you have to either make private all the videos that may be flagged as reused content (instead of deleting) because if you delete a lot of videos that have a lot of views, your channel will suddenly lose so many views and I heard it literally buries your channel and you'll disappear from the searches and rankings straight to the bottom, so the proper way to delete videos is to just private them.

Next, once you get remonetized, you have to set all videos that you think have reused content to monetization OFF, so that it won't penalize your account as reused content and demonetize you. If I am wrong, I will find out soon enough and report back here.

One more thing just for your information.
if you use copyrighted content on your channel like music or movies that also does not mean that you aren't eligible for monetization.
there are channels that add completely transformative work to copyrighted music like making some crazy videos with good editing etc. and other example of a channel that made insane trailers by using special effects and editing and made completely original looking Trailers by using scenes from different trailers.
if you have high quality channel with a little bit of copyrighted content like music here and there but completely good and original videos, you are then having a good chance for monetization.

yeah but the private video's watch hour doesn't include into the 4,000 watch hours ... (you should have mention that too) and i am not stating facts in previous post.. i was just telling what i read somewhere in google forum .. the mods (or whatever they call themselves) said that the reviewer can also look into your private videos if they have to and nothing is hidden from youtube.

I just wanted to note something. The videos that used to be public that I had made private (that I believed to have high reused content) used to get me around a couple thousand views a week (totaling to about 50k views each video since I uploaded it back in the summer), but I noticed when I put them back as "public", I have maybe 1-5 views in the last few days for those videos that used to perform well. It looks like when you move a video into private and then switch it back to public, you end up losing ranking or something because they are no longer getting views LOL. If anyone can confirm this is true, that would be good to know for youtubers.

I also had a a video that was really well ranked which I've set to private for a while and then made it public again. Took a few weeks to re rank if I remember correctly. So yeah, it will take some time for the traffic to recover.

I have permissions for everything but they don't care, as long as I don't make it, it's reused. I have this channel since 2008, it's actually a great channel, I don't do it only for the money, I made a DJ carrier thanks to it.

For your second question, well if you put a video which gets lots of views read - viral video) on private and than put it back on public after some time, it won't get that many views anymore, probably because it won't be suggested anymore. That's why I chose unpopular videos, because they're irrelevant for my channel.
