True ! But ours has very good stats on page, some with 6+ min time spent on page ... Good UX, everything...but disappeared from SERPs, and have not come back yet.

Same for me guys ! 57 results, only 1 page and 1 result on page 2 (so 11 results that you see in total).
This looks SO MUCH like an indexing bug.

Signed up for this single reason, your posts and a few others have been really helpful.
I have an affiliate site..... great content, "light gray hat" links but barely enough of them to trigger anything. Searching for my domain (site:domain.com) has results down to 12 pages, even though Google says "about 86 results".
Mobile usability in search console has this site down to 2 valid pages. 0 errors though! I've gone through and tested a lot of pages using the mobile usability checker and it's very inconsistent. Click refresh 10 times and get 10 different results. A lot of the time there is an "Other error" on resource loads. Doing some research tells me this is usually a robots.txt issue (not present on my site) or a crawl budget issue.
Every other mobile usability tester around (Bing, Merkle, etc) works fine and browsing on phone is no problem.
Mobile speed (experimental) has temporarily been slow (web host issues), but also shows a decline in pages from January 7. Desktop speed shows the same decline in pages from January 7 onwards.
The weird thing is, Coverage is supposedly business as usual:
But as another poster said, they are "Valid, Indexed, not submitted in sitemap" (these pages are definitely in the sitemap).
If I have to guess it seems this pre-update (Jan 7) brings more ranking drops to non-mobile friendly sites. At the same time, some Googlebot-mobile crawlers are having trouble rendering JS, or crawl budgets are 95% less than they used to and causing issues. Or I'm completely wrong. It's probably the last one.
I could have written this message. Everything you say, I see the same. Interesting to see this exact situation happening to both of us. Only 2 valid pages for mobile, rendering is 10 times different when running 10 checks,....and so on ! Let's hope this is just a bug.

There seems to be something up with the indexing. I run a small Google News site and my posts are normally indexed in minutes. When they rolled out this update they stopped indexing new posts, keywords I was tracking dropped out of the top 100 and when I ran the site:XXX.com query Google either replied with 100 indexed posts or 200 or 600. It changed everytime I ran the query.
I checked this morning and my keywords are back where they were, pages are being indexed again and Google seems to agree with itself on how many pages and posts they have indexed.
None of this is scientific but there seems to have been a reset by Google after their indexing threw a fit

Don't do that, it really does. Tried and tested.
well my website was completely destroyed and I don't believe it's gonna come back...
I thought maybe it's time to do smth about it....

Does anyone has actually recovered from this mess? One of my unique websites (totally white hat) with more than 100k words got hit. Mostly for the main keywords which is ridiculous. No bad links and not single backlink ever made for it. All content is unique and strange part is that the website got the biggest hit for the main keywords. On the other side the other kws with low search volume are almost on the same position. My competitors have funny websites with almost spinned content and not even close to mine and they didn't get hit. But that's what says Google - content quality lol. They must fix this asap.
This gives me some hope. When did this happen for you? For me it's been like this since the 7th of January.
Slowly but steady I start to think the same... You guys think a 301 would not be safe in the long run? I’m thinking of deindexing/deleting the site and republishing the content on a new site - knowing that it might take some time to get any rankings back.
But since my old site already is totally whitehat I just have lost all my trust in Google. So sad :-(

As in within hours of the update rolling out (I am in the UK) the keywords I was tracking dropped out of the top 100 and my posts were not indexing but when I checked today at 5pm UK time the keywords were back where they were and I posted 4 articles and submitted them via GSC and they were indexed within about 15 minutes.
I am not getting anymore traffic or any less since I was not getting much before the update. but it is as if the update hit and was then corrected. I am no worse off or better off but did not have much traffic to start

A site of mine that was hit in September, and then in November actually benefited from this update. Went from 1,000 visitors a day to 700 visitors a day from the September update. Then in November, it shot me down to 250 visitors a day. Been holding steady on that for the past few months until this update, which has brought my average to 500/day.
