Hey guys, so sorry if I make a mistake posting a thread here. But, I wanted to know if someone is in the domain name business and kindly explain how they do it. Do you just buy a domain and build a website around it, or buy it and hope to God someone is looking for that specific domain and will pay a handsome fee to take it off your hands.

Is common to buy domains and just sale the name with no content? For example if there is going to be a new game coming out buy the domain for the game and then sale it? For example gta6.game or gta6.tv or just any iteration of that

You don't need anything else but to be the owner of the domain to sell it.

You don’t need to build a website around a domain to sell it. You don’t need to wait around for someone to contact you with an offer either. Do manual outreach for your domain to parties you think might be interested in it. If the domain is aged, it usually has more value than a freshly registered one.

To me , I saw those buyers will buy is mostly aged domain with lots of quality backlinks.

This is already benefit to them in the first place, no need to build backlinks first
since the domain already have tons of it , already been rank etc.

what I see they will remove all contents? and reinsert their ones which related to their stuffs.
no doubt they will choose a domain related to their stuffs.

I don't know what's the buyers mind and what they looking for come to buying a domain.

sometimes I see luck also play a part , as a domain name can be related to a niche , thing
can be vary a lot.

I have flipped a lot of domains by just buying them, sending out professional emails to end buyers, transferring the domain to them and thats it. I target Geo domains or domains with popular keywords. My domains have sold from $150 up to $1500.

I've seen a few threads here and there about domain flipping, but they seem really basic and/or incomplete.

I've been contemplating starting an AMA on the topic (actually, @FUTUR TIM has been riding my ass to do this and I don't think he'll leave me alone until I do),

Because this is primarily an SEO forum, I wasn't sure what interest there would be here on the subject.

Also, I didn't know how an AMA would be perceived by such a new member. I thought that I would build up some cred first and maybe go blue before doing an AMA.

Maybe the fact that I've made >$100K flipping domains is cred enough. IDK.

From my bio:

I'm a writer.

I'm a domain investor from the 90s. My biggest sale was in 2012 in the mid $xx,xxx for a brandable 8L.com domain name. I later discovered that an intermediary bought the domain for a Belgian beer company... and I probably could have gotten a lot more money for it... but I was very happy with what I got, enough to buy a new car and to put a down payment on a house.

At one point, I had 5000+ domain names. My current portfolio consists of ~200.

I'm here on BHW to contemplate the next chapter of this journey by building out some of my domains.

Thanks to each of you for sharing your sage selves. I plan to absorb as much as I can... and hopefully to pay it forward when I am able.

I know what people want. You shouldn't worry about credibility as long as you share quality stuff.

What you described is one method, but not the one I would follow. If prayer is required, then I'm gonna pass on that buy haha.

Not sure how to begin with you. Are you totally new to domains?

Mod will most likely move this to Domain Name subforum.
I am the freshest of new to domains lol, I did not really know where to post but I am glad it has been moved.

You must have some deep knowledge of this, are you saying that you have bought domains for 100 $ and flipped to about 1000$, if u have done this then hats off to you man

I had no idea I was in close proximity to a genius when it comes do domain names and such...would love to hear more, how do you do this AMA and what's the hold up if you still havent started it? My idea is to build a website around the domain name and make it valuable so when it comes to selling I have a bargaining chip besides the domain name alone.

It was a good business a few time back when EMD were loved by google, now it is less the case, and people prefer branding. But surely there is still money to be made.
Be careful of trademarks, GTA etc, don't register these, until you live somewhere far from everything

I don't think 8L.com domain worth $100, even before 2012. I believe it's something around $1000? Seeing market price today

Good business? It was the get rich fast scheme that was not a scheme in reality. I regret not having learned about this when it was the good business you say back in the day, I mean when you search on google top domain names sold, you get 40 million dollars. Some of us are always behind on things, screw us am I right? haha

If you have 8L.com I think its value is more around high $x0000

yep but all generic domains were taken, so it was not as easy as it seems

I forgot to ask, does anyone know if domain name registering selling and getting paid is in any way restricted to only some countries in the world? Or can anyone with a valid credit card do it?
