In my mind there are two types of domain flippers:
1. Those who build a website from scratch and then sell it
2. Those who buy websites that are for sale, improve them, and then sell them
(There are some who can find good websites for sale cheap and then sell them on for more with better marketing etc. but I'll leave that one alone)
For both of those having a good understanding of how to develop a website and its content would be necessary.

I ended up loving a bunch of domains I bought and quickly realized they were worthless and/or hard to sell. Blinded by the cool sounding names haha.

Just as with real estate, buy low, sell high. The profit is made on the purchase, not on the sale.
Flipping naked domains in today's market is a lot different than it was just a few years ago. There are tons of folks doing this:
More than 95% of domains out there are rubbish. But if you have a penchant for analysis and forensic process, you can find the gems.
As for the end user, education is key. The majority of startups just don't understand domains and what a good domain name will do for their business. A lot of internet marketers just don't understand domains either when they're not SEO-utilized for website buildouts.
DNAcademy is a good learning venue for beginners.
The podcast by Domain Sherpa-- although I have a hard time listening to the woman host now that the founder sold it (the woman's voice just rubs me the wrong way)-- has a ton of great information. The domain experts roundtable specific domains with each podcast and advise what they do or don't like about them.

Heres my experience with flipping domains and some take-a-ways for you.
Year is 2011 and I'm helping a friend run a game server company - and if you don't remember back in the day we had things like IRC before all the fanboy whatsapp, slack, i.e. Not to crap on any of them I personally like discord.
Anyways point is the industry had a lot of cool sounding domain names like Pandemonium, StateOfPing, i.e. So I decided to register a few names with the intention of selling. I remember one of the names sold the next day on the marketplace. Bought it for $9 and sold it for $48. Not bad my younger self was thinking, certainly sold a few names without a website behind em'.
If you're going to do this now, I'd imagine it is more lucrative than ever. Most will tell you stick with .com but what really matters is fork out some money and have fun with it.

Here you have some tips to become a successful domain flipper:
- Don't be afraid of Risks.
- Choose a niche that you are familiar with.
- Spot the best domains out there.
- Follow this order : .com > .net > .org.
- Register expired domain names.
- Have some content on that domain name.

Certainly, there is a viable revenue stream in flipping naked domains in today's marketplace, but the tactics have changed a lot in recent years. Buy and pray worked many years ago, but not so much any more, for a myriad of reasons. I don't necessarily say that you must stick with .com, although it is absolutely my preferred extension (in my current portfolio, 1% are .net, 0.5% are .org, and the rest are .com), but the more you venture away from the oe (original extensions), the more you really have to know what you're doing (I lost my ass with the .tv craze).
Certainly, there is a decent enough income from small, fast flips such as the ones you described. Call me a greedy ass, I guess, but I've never sold a domain for less than $3K and most often towards/above $xx,xxx. It really just depends upon the flipper's situation and income goals.

Best ways to sell domaines nowadays:
- look for a small business owner (or ecommerce) existing domain. Buy the .net or .Org or .com domain with hyphens, and sell it to them .
- look in your local newspaper for businesses freshly created ,register their domain name ,and sell it to them
- same when you are walking in the street, look for small stores and check online if they have a domain ,if not ,buy it and resell it to them

These days, I don't outreach, but that's only because I don't need to sell the domains. By being a bit more passive now, it helps to weed out the tire kickers. Instead, I make my whois public and, yes, I have them parked with a "make offer" landing page as well as listing them on a few marketplaces.
Outbound marketing works well, as @M4DM4X outlined above, especially for those who are starting out or in need of capital investment.
When I was building my business, I would research niches, particularly local geo (driving around town with a spiral notebook and just writing down all of the potential customers), go home and register the best of them, and then outreach to potential clients for a 30x+ flip or so.
There are still, even in 2019, tons of people without a web presence who could benefit.
I think there is still tremendous opportunity in [local] geo, especially for an area in which you are familiar. As an example, I registered the domain name of dentists for my city. This isn't it, but something like VeniceDentist=com. Then I outreached to all of the dentists in my area (Venice) and offered the domain name to the highest bidder, flipping it for 45x (and he ended up becoming my dentist lol).
There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of dentists in a local area... and only one will have claim to the VeniceDentist=com domain. Which website are customers more apt to remember: VeniceDentist=com or RichardsonSmilesInFlorida=com ?
If you're skilled in web development, which I am not, you could even build out the domain name with a sample site. Just like staging a house (you should think of domains just like real estate), when you're dealing with end users, a domain that is sitting on a staged/developed site almost always increases the sale because it helps them to visualize the potential of the brand.
The domain extension debate of .com vs. .net vs .org has existed from the beginning and will probably continue past our lifetimes, but personally, I would avoid .net/.org domain names for brandables, and I would avoid hyphens at all costs, for the reasons I stated here: https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/h...0-com-domain-all-taken.1175070/#post-12590508 and https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/w...-com-domain-is-4000usd.1169815/#post-12526941 .
