Don't make the mistake I made

Sad to hear about your loss. I think this has happened to all of us at some point. It's at that point when we learn the following lesson: If you're using a computer for business, you should at the very least setup RAID or use some external backup device.

Yeesh all these comments about SSDs. Actually SSDs are way worse because they tend to function at 100% until they suddenly expire where traditional HDDs tend to have warning signs associated with its future demise (though not guaranteed).

Overall, SSD's though are a much better option, don't you think?

I recently upgraded to an SSD. I've been using HDD's most of my life due to the fact that I can just save & store tons of information at a low cost.

SSD's have no moving parts. No disk bullshit.

Upgrade to an SSD my friend and ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS, back up your data/research/projects to a flash drive. I learned that the hard way in college.

Good luck buddy.

you can keep an auto-destruct app on the drive to prevent data loss. give it a name that is sure to draw attention ("nude girlfriend pics") and when clicked it will delete the drive contents. something like the old "hard-drive killer" would work.

What auto-destruct software do you recommend?

try to recover them via software or hire someone that can..

there are people that can do that stuff.if the Hard disk motor not working, they can take the data somehow ..try it..

If you're looking for cloud storage to backup your files, I would recommend backblaze which offers unlimited storage for 1 pc at $6/month.

Notable mentions:

Oracle archive tier which is $3/TB and free restore up to 10TB.

Azure and AWS cheapest archive tier which is $1/TB but restores will cost an arm and a leg. See their bandwidth costs.

Wow sorry abt this situation! Hopefully all is fine now :)

SSD is worse because when it dies you can't recover anything from it, and it dies without notice.

HDD has the information stored on physical discs that can even be dismantled, there are data recovery companies that specialize in this.

So we're not talking about speed here to recommend SSD, OP has other problems.

I lost an HDD 15 years ago, didn't have much on it but my music collection, but it was a waking call because now I do my main work on the primary SSD and I backup on a secondary HDD, ocassionaly also backing up everything important on an external drive and in cloud.

So yeah, backup is the keyword.

Some valid points.

I have a rule - if you don't have anything saved on two disks, you don't have anything saved. Take care you only get stronger

For the past 2-3 years. I always save my work on dropbox. HDD only for OS and games.
