Hi all, I just had a bad experience with an irate business owner who I contacted to take leads from one of my rank and rent websites.

I approached him last night by email to ask if he was interested in taking the leads from my website. Today I get an angry call from him wanting all my details name information etc so he could report me to Google and whoever else for false advertising.

Be warned, I wasn't prepared for this and wiggled my way out of it with a convincing story of how I had this website that I built for the clients who did not pay so I was renting the leads out for a while until I got paid.

Has this ever happened to you?

What did he mean for false advertising? I've never had issues with rank and rent clients apart from ones looking for a freebie.

I don't get it. Exactly what did he accuse you of doing that is wrong?

I assume you rank for "Cleaning service in Florida" or something like that and then cold called him asking if he wants his details on your website?

I'm guessing you out rank his website and he's pissed off that you can now sell him the leads he wasn't able to get. I'm thinking either he has been trying his own SEO or has been getting hosed by some SEO service that isn't giving him results.

Never happened to me but he's definitely not a customer you want and you could have quickly ended the call. Just offer the leads to his competitors.

Wow! Easiest way to deal with that is hang-up. But yeah, that sucks that he was that irate. Probably won't be in business much longer anyways if that's how he is. Getting so pissed at an email that he calls and reads you the riot act. Yikes!

I have the #1 postion in this particular niche and his site is nowhere to be seen. He just relies on Yell.com. He was pissed for it being a "fake" company taking his business.

Because its listed in GMB and #1 spot in serps. So he twigged if i am offering him the leads its not a real business.

So what if you're not a 'real' business - doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. I wouldn't have bothered trying to justify yourself to him and you should have just up front told him that if he's not interested then you'll sell leads to his competitors instead.

On the other side of things, that's why I would definitely favour a proper rank and rent rather than lead selling. Just rent out the phone number and contact form on your site to a company and then your legit advertising them rather than presenting to be a real company.

Thanks for the words of support guys ;)

Tell him it'd be a real shame if someone added a ton of negative reviews onto his Yell listing.

What a twat.

I'm fairly certain people have gone to prison for this just so everyone is aware of the full dangers of doing this.

But I absolutely agree he's a twat haha. He's just pissed he's missing out on that business.

He is going to be pissed when you are going to rent your page to one of his competitor :D

Hope he will remember the phonecall

I typically tell them I am able to get quality leads from various sources. I don't rank and rent, so I don't review my sites. I just direct calls to the customer.

But I can see how this would upset the right person. I have never had it happen to me.

Just grow a pair and confront him that this is your business model, if he doesn't want them his competition does. Some people clean toilets for a living, others rank sites. Easy as that. Also, what does he think he can reach when reporting to Google? lol

Morons will be morons. Congrats on ranking so well though! How long did it take you?

Hey man, i'm curious, how money do you need to rank a site like that?

Years ago I built out some rank and rent sites, I had tons sitting that I never sold.

One day this guy calls me and tells me he's going to sue me for stealing his name. The site had a phone number on it but it was forwarded to a voicemail. The whois had fake information. He got my phone number from Twilio.

I search around google and can't find what he's talking about. He says go on Yahoo. I type in Los Angeles Plumbing or something like that and I'm ranked number one. His website is LosAngelesPlumbingProInc.com. He's ranked like number 5. Instead of pissing him off more since I didn't have a customer for the site I just forwarded the site to his domain.

Thinking back I should have just told him to fuck off or pay.
