How do you do your Keyword Research?

99% keyword elimination is my goal at the moment. It means im getting the 1% that I'm likely to have a chance at ranking for. That does not mean that I will never go for it. I have a spreadsheet that works it out into a decimal. Therefore I go for the lowest numbers first, then move up.

100% agree with you. Even using free tools you can easily generate hundreds and even thousands of keywords but "cleaning" the list it´s the hard part, especially when you´re doing everything with free tools/manually.The toughest part for me is the keyword difficulty analysis. This is where a paid/premium keyword tool comes handy to bulk check the kw difficulty levels.

My 3 steps:

1. kwfinder + keyword revealer (checking same keyword on both to verify competition)
2. manually review top 5# on their onpage seo
3. check for variations which I can add in same article as sub-keywords

Thats it pretty much for me. I don't have ahrefs or moz accounts but if you have those will be very useful.

Yes i still go for it. breaking into top 3 might be difficult but all goes to how that individual page has been designed in the authority sites.

When just starting out I think you should use Moz because of the 30 day trial and you can cancel at any time. AHref makes you pay 7 bucks. It's not that big of a deal but if you want to bootstrap something from nothing why pay the extra 7 bucks. It's not really a trial when they make you pay for it. Moz gives you a pure 30 day trial and you can use their other tools as well.

You can also identity high, medium and low competition keywords in Bing advertising for free with an ad account. Of course, you only get the search data for Bing and not Google but it costs you nothing. If you are targeting the USA you may be able to extrapolate pretty reliably to the competition on google and search volume (but maybe not, I am not sure).

Normally, I rely heavily on Google Adwords to do keyword analysis - the estimated traffic should be very accurate, and the difficulty should be accurate as well - higher paid keywords will have more competitors and harder to rank.
But what I also look at are the long-tail keywords. Normally the shorter ones are harder to rank, but long tail keywords also bring in traffic nonetheless.

I use the Keyword Planner. It takes some time to make a list of keyword suggestions that you can use, based on the keyword volume, competition score and meaning. However, maybe it is a better option than to completely rely on software.

I say Yes.
Because I will never click on a CNN link or a Wikihow link (I hate them both).
Assuming there are a lot of people like me that skip those ones, then you should go for it.

The data that __% of clicks in SERP go to the top google result,
and __% of clicks go to the top 3 links... that is GENERAL data and is not very meaningful when it comes to some markets.

For example, if I'm googling "time now New York" or "what's the weather in Dallas"
of course I'm gonna click the #1 link and stop my search there.

But if I'm googling "best remedy for my severe constipation" or "natural cure for my 2 year old hemorrhoid" then I might click many of the links on page one (including Webmd which is often useless) and even proceeding to page 2.

Ahrefs is the king but you have some alternatives to consider like:

- Google Keyword Planner.
- SEMrush.
- KWFinder.
- Long Tail Pro.
- Majestic.
- Keyword Tool.
- Serpstat.

Today...
I check through my compensation keywords using same tool and look out for long tail kws with low search volume less than 500...

Pick these kws and put in google search with quotes and see pages that rank for exact kws, if i notice lots of authority sites ranking for same kw i let go until im sure the sites im competing with are much like myself then i go for such kws

Ahrefs´ keyword difficulty score is just a weighted average for the backlink profile of the top 10 results for that particular keyword.

You need to go beyond both monthly searches and the keyword difficulty score.
