Genuinely curious. Yeah, I check top 3 results and all that but when it comes down to it how do you do it? What's your process?

https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/ultimate-guide-how-to-analyse-serp-and-keyword-competition.1118710/ is how I do competitor analysis and work out keyword difficulty.

As for Keyword research (finding the keywords) I use a range of tools:

  • Ahrefs
  • Keywords everywhere
  • Keyword shitter
  • Answer the public
Exactly what I was looking for. The keyword difficulty part is what I had an argument about, I will take a look thanks.

My 3 steps:

1. kwfinder + keyword revealer (checking same keyword on both to verify competition)
2. manually review top 5# on their onpage seo
3. check for variations which I can add in same article as sub-keywords

Thats it pretty much for me. I don't have ahrefs or moz accounts but if you have those will be very useful.

From what I know KW is utter bullshit, never heard of KW revealer before

It is hard to say.

I found some i thought was easy, built a site on them but i quickly realized they weren't so.

I feel i am a little more clued up now, so i have found another niche, fitness related albeit, with no 'authority' site dedicated to the KW.

I will likely use @Holzr method from his latest thread to analyze a bit more in-depth though.

So you just go on keywordshitter type of sites and just use those keywords? Yeah that is really bad, you need to do some research on them first

This is how I pretty much do my keyword research (taken from Chase Reiners Livestream):

Then I fill out my Excel sheet:

Step 1: Make a list of important, relevant topics based on what you know about your business.
Step 2: Fill in those topic buckets with keywords.
Step 3: Research related search terms.
Step 4: Check for a mix of head terms and long-tail keywords in each bucket.
Step 5: See how competitors are ranking for these keywords.
Step 6: Use the Google AdWords Keyword Planner to cut down your keyword list.

Copy from another forum, lol nice try.

This seems to be a good chance to get to get my keyword research method annihilated...
1. Use KWFinder to find low difficulty keywords with ~500 searches/mth
2. Google allintitle:Keyword
3. If the amount of results that come back are over half of the monthly searches, I do not bother.
4. If they are lower than half I look at the SERPs and see DA/PA of the top 10
5. If PA is <20 on any of the results I look at their backlinks on AHRefs
6. If I can almost match it or beat it I look at the content
7. I write longer, better content.
8. I sometimes copy their work into worpress to see what their yoast results are like.

The allintitle:Keyword trick is nice but if the search results are over half of the traffic you dont bother? This will eliminate 99% of the keywords out there, thats a bad practice in my book. KWFinder pulls data from Google Adsense or keyword planner (can't remember) so I doubt them results or at least cross check them with Aharefs, I dont use Yoast because its bloated and pretty much useless nowdays. Thanks for the ideas though!

99% keyword elimination is my goal at the moment. It means im getting the 1% that I'm likely to have a chance at ranking for. That does not mean that I will never go for it. I have a spreadsheet that works it out into a decimal. Therefore I go for the lowest numbers first, then move up.
