What happens to the internet now?

I just read on a news report that Russia is looking into having their own version of the internet. China already has something similar.

How will a fractured internet work? Particularly with stuff like social media or IM?

Russia isn't creating their own internet, they are working to make sure that Russian sites will work in case they are cut off from the internet.

What ways are there to make money that are not life threatening?

Also I know that most VPN are not secure, they sell data of their users, is it not dangerous to you?
