Is the Internet dying?

We do not have a clear picture of how the internet will evolve, But we know that until the ROBOTS take over, we can make money.

The competition is too big these days, in the past you didnt need much money to invest to earn something, now if you dont have some thousands to burn you are screwed right from the start.

i miss the internet of the 90s too. at least people who were on the internet back then had to have some skill to even get online....
now with all those phone junkies who have no idea how things actually work, but walz around like they know everything. thanks to apple and google the internet is full of idiots and everything is made to be easy for dumb people.

yah, who ever invests the more, gets the customer

Good emphasis on gmail, it even scares me sometimes when I think how many private mails are being kept at one company.

Let this sink in: the boss of the world's largest spy agency was caught in a sex scandal using....Gmail.

Exactly, we're not really building websites based on what people like anymore but based on what Google likes.

EDIT: best example of this is youtube. Most of the content there is trash because of this reason.

Exactly. What percentage of WWW content is legit?

Today a thousand people gonna sit down and pump out 20k words for sites each of them. Basically none of those 20k words are needed anywhere. It's just for Google.

We can Say the same for tv, printed press etc. It's just old people's nostalgia.

Not it's not.

TV and printed press never gave the individual the power to publish.

The internet did.

Back in the 1990's anyone would publish what they really wanted to publish, not for search engines.

Links were not sold or meant for ranking. It was all naive and legit. Sites published the truth, not what big corporations wanted to hear.

Today 99% of the crap posted by SEO experts is simply what Google told them to say. It's all fake.

Today links between urls are no longer organic. A strict minority links for real. Most links are commercially traded. Google completely destroyed the original intent of the WWW. Links are money, not legit citations any more.

Facebook destroyed individual publishing. People no longer run blogs or sites, they go into Facebook's closed system and live there. Same for Twitter.

The Internet gave individuals all the power and individuals decided to give it all up.

It's not dead but its crowded now.

Did you even read any of the points we made in this thread? I don't think so.

I guess you're the usual guy trying to increase his posts count and I doubt you even realised that the posts made in this section won't add to that counter.

All your points are valid, but the reason the internet is moving in this direction is because of what people choose to spend their time on, including you and me. You vote with your attention/time, the corporations aren't forcing anyone to do anything, they just focus more and more of their resources on the elements that get the most attention. The only corporate bias is towards serving more ads, but the geocities sites you mentioned are not against adsense monetization or making money, so I don't think you can really explain the current development of the internet with any corporate bias, just with where people's attention naturally goes.

As a whole, this is a very interesting topic and creates very interesting meta-level phenomena. Everything works in cycles, which is similar to what a pendulum is in physics. AI automatically serves people with content they want to click, which creates a world of clickbait. People then get bored of the shallowness of that and start looking for deeper non-clickbaity content, then a new form of clikbait or a way to get a users attention appears and people start exploiting that until again, saturation occurs and people move to something else.

Also, it's worth questioning the value of even thinking about those 'larger picture' events and analyzing them, you can make a strong argument that people who are more 'stupid' and ignorant of such complex ideas and have blind, often non-logical optimism(like a horse with blinders) are often the happiest and make the most money by laser focusing on their tasks and goals. I myself know that thinking about this sort of stuff has never practically helped me.

Certainly, the bias of the human brain towards negativity (looking for what might go wrong, in evolution helps with survival) will make sure that you arrive to negative conclusions any time you start deeply analyzing what is happening 'in the internet' or in the world (unless you are able to detach from how it affects you/your livelihood) . Hence, the title of your thread.

Well, that's one way to look at it. I don't think anything bad is going on.
There should be some standards in everything, we have mister Jesus in life that tells us 'not to kill', we have Google that tells us how to have a 'good' site.

It's your choice to be a simple individual or to become a big corporation and make own rules.
It's only a matter of time till we have a dozen different googles where you will have a choice which one to rank on.

Sites in the 90s took ages to load, had ugly gifs, and were 'all over the place'.
Fact that you can access sites from your TV makes life easier and the internet more accessible.

The Internet in a way is dying, not because of the Internet itself but because people are lazy and don't think. People want shit fed to them.

Gmail is easy to use and setup, people use Amazon once again because its easy its not cheaper but more convenient. To me the Internet used to be true freedom you could find cool stuff and information not available anywhere else, way to censored now just a bunch of repetitive blah blah blah.

People will say its evolving, I guess it is but it does not mean its better.

It's so interesting to me that the thing which caused people to stop going outside 10 years ago is now forcing people to go outside 10 years later due to its own self-inflicted mistakes.

And we are also going to have AI in a few years time :(

Things looking scary!

This is true, to some extent. No one forces you to do anything below. It's just you, me, and many others choose to compete with ourselves when we start to realize there is money online.
