I think a similiar article has been shared before but this one says they're testing it later this week in Canada. I would like to know peoples opinions on it. I don't think it will cause much harm to IG accounts as it's still the algorithm we're trying to beat to show up on peoples feeds more. What do you guys think?

If anyone on here is from Canada could they share their experiences if it's tested on their accounts?

Sounds like a terrible idea on the part of Instagram. It would definitely cut back on profits from SMM panels and increase their own though so it makes sense from a business standpoint.

If it goes through, well organic growth services will probably be the dominant market for IG since many of these pretend celebs are effectively trying to "grow" as fast as possible. Now there'd be little value in faking likes/views. However, I do think it would significantly shift the IG experience. Explore page is one place I think we'll see a difference.

Fake engagement would see a slight decrease but would remain relevant, if for nothing else, to game the algo to feed followers & general users our (or our customers') posts.

That's the new settings button. On this screen, you will see listings for finding friends, photos you've liked, and account settings. Press the toggle switch and you'll be greeted with the following message, “Toggle to require authorization before anyone can follow you. Your existing followers won't be affected.”

I love the idea, at least it will ease the competition since many will quit boosting their (or clients) account

Their greed will kill them IMO. So many more people are aware of what Facebook/Instagram are doing nowadays.

I think this is a great step , now it would be esay to boost page how have gain followers organically

no chance they will do it. This is what their platform is all about, gain likes to boost peoples ego. no likes = no IG.

No chance you say? Well here in Canada it's already happening :(

Canadian here, nothing has changed it just says "so and so and _ other have liked your post" my engagement is the exact same but I've noticed on my public profiles there's no way to view but all my business accounts just use insights

another money move to try to get rid of shoutouts and sell more advertising space the same thing they did with facebook

I think this will be fully implemented. It's actually a very good idea from IG's point of view - they almost kill off botting and they completely kill off SMM panels in one move. That is their main goal for doing this.

At the same time they can say some BS about how it's to improve people's self esteem/confidence.

Influencers will still be around - they just now need to focus on content. And of course it would no longer be possible to bot your way to the top. So if you have an already established/organically growing account, you're good. If you're getting started in the IG game this is terrible. But even this is good for IG because they probably think there are too many influencers now anyway. They WANT to close the door on business/opportunist pages and promote more regular use, unless you pay IG for ads.

They're probably testing it with random people or somethin'.

And I believe what dragon192 wrote above ^ is quite true. Spot on, actually.

We all know how dopamine and IG works, if they remove this feature they may achieve certain goals but they will lose the addiction that a lot of users have in long term. IG is all about Likes and showing the world how cool you are.
If people cant see your likes no more, probably in long term they will kill IG as we know it nowadays.

I don't think this is a big deal, likes are only a visual social proof. People who want to sell shoutouts would still have access to their statistics which they can show to potential clients.
Botting will continue as usual as it was never about likes, it was about followers and getting their attention to your content/product.
We'll only have some whiny celebrities complaining about their likes not being visible to the audience to satisfy their ego.

Suckerberg acting desperate lol. They can't stop botting and smm panels. Let them kill their own platform by doing this. Although hiding likes from general public won't make a huge difference.

Terrible idea!!! all we know that for celebrities likes are like drugs... they can't live without seeing numbers of likes and not only celebrities... i think they will see bad results while testing this so it will not be done.

What bad results?

The results they'll be measuring are things like

-whether engagement increases/decreases, despite being hidden
-whether normal people post more often (very important)
-whether browsing time increases/decreases

As I said before I think all of these metrics will improve during the test (and instagram must do too, otherwise why test?).

If you have a small account, bot hard now because it will be 10x harder if they implement this fully
