None of these updates target the quantity of content. You can have a lot of content but still rank nowhere.

I've noticed this too... One of our hardest hit pages has around 1500 words.

Some listings on page one (where we were) have 200 words. It seems to me that the huge brands are once again taking the tops spots.

So I have a big site of mine that has survived all the updates from the past few months, until last night.

All of a sudden at one point, the site lost ALL of it's rankings in one instance. It now ranks on page 5-6 for every keyword. The site has 500+ pages of content (2k words avg length), with 1-2 new pages added daily. In the last 60 days, 10+ natural editorial backlinks have been secured as well.

I'm not sure what happened here, and the way everything just flew to the 5th page is nutty, especially when it has happened across 30,000+ keywords.

Even if you search my site's brand name, I'm only on the 5th page.

Yep, a few hours ago I received a "unnatural link building" message. Time to start going over everything.

I have been associated with guest posting and outreach for the past 2-3 years and all I can say from experience is people are more focused on getting follow links instead of no-follow links.

That makes me think some webmasters don't read or pay heed to what's happening around.

Not only a healthy follow/no-follow ratio is necessary, you must also keep a heathy mix of money, non-money, generic, and branded keywords in play.

And then some of us don't understand the rational behind unnatural link-building.

Unless you folks start thinking from the prospect of branding your business, as well as understand intent of your users, these periodic Google updates will continue to wreck havoc on your sites. Most of us start branding our businesses from link building, which leaves very little value to the links we create.

Just my 2 cents.

Just trying to understand, your website got enough content? Avg length of article? Whats your no.fo.llow and do.f.ollow ratio? Your were using main keywords aggressively for link building, I mean main keywords, not generic anchors? How you are monetizing your website?

It has got to do with INTENT. And that's why while unnatural link building is getting pulled up by Google, natural link building is getting rewarded.

A link can be natural, niche-relevant but the brownie point is associated with how relevant it's to a reader that might glean over the post and be inclined to visit the link you left in a parasite, a niche site or even in a news site.

The drill of white-hat link building has gone through a noticeable change in the past years. Then again, not every one of us has woken up to it. And those that did are banking hard while most of us are looking for ways to beat one Google update after the other.

Something was changed with the algo, which flagged websites for manual review. Reviewer comes along, confirms the findings, and then administrates the penalty.

I've been punished in the past for a site which I was never able to recover, so had to abandon it. With my current site, I've managed to escape this round of updates, but you just never know what's round the corner. Hate it when we're not even sure what caused the flags.

Yea, it definitely surprised me. In the last 3 years, this site hasn't been affected by a single major update. It's just been trucking along and killing it.
