I Personally Build Links When I am in no.1 or no.3 whereas slow down the process in link building.

never stop. just imagine a real world case, don't you think journalists most of the time link to 1st result ? also check your comps links, if they are getting links, you should.

If I want the first place I keep building links until I get it.

After that it depends on resources, other keywords I want to target etc so I will usually stop and keep my eye on it.

Talking about medium to high competitive keywords let's suppose that we build 500-1000 links per month for 6 months.

Website starts ranking in top 3.

And now we stop building links, so it looks like this:

month1 - 500 links
month2 - 600 links
month3 - 600 links
month4 - 800 links
month5 - 900 links
month6 - 1000 links - top 3 achieved
month7 - 0 links
month8 - 0 links
month9 - 0 links
...

This chart is an obvious indicator of manipulation for Google. You wanted rankings. You build links. Goal achieved - you stopped. So you're likely to lose rankings.

Also your competitors won't stop building links after you get into top3. They will likely make a bigger push.

I think that it's fine to start building less links. But these should be expensive, high quality links that will push your backlink profile to a safer side.

My competitor is a massive back-linker (with do a do-no follows). However, it's site moved from #1 position to the 2nd page in a snap and it still going down.
I think the linking process must be natural and stable, maybe link building is cool for the first two months but, other than, it could hurt.

I have 4-5 keyword in the top position at first and second page and I continue with high-quality link building strategy because I don't want to lose ranking. So my suggestion is that you should continue with a higher authoritative link building strategy. And avoids lower link building techniques like link exchange, fake directories, and much more.

Even don't create new pages/blogs/news or anything using the same keywords which are already ranking, by doing so it may affect the rankings and you'll see other pages may conflict the existing SERP pages.

Usually when I get my serps goal I keep working just on brand awarnesses without linking to anything or just linking for Social media accounts
