Do you stop link building?

When you get like #1-#3 position. Do you stop your link building?
I know generic answers would be keep building but in reality is it too risk?

I have some kws on top 3 and I have stopped link building completely to those pagea/kw. If it goes down I mostly get some quality diversity pack to get back my position.

Once I'm on #1-#3 for keywords with 1000+ search volume, I slow down link-building. Instead, I keep the content updating and stealing sub-topics from competitors.
Also, i follow Google search console to pick up keywords that I'm ranked at 10-100th positions and optimize content with them(if it's already not optimized).

Also, I don't let the CTR go down and make as many elements/changes in the content as it demands to keep the dwell time high.
Got good results and consistent #1 rankings so far.

If I get rank on top position for some kws, then I will stop doing link building.
But if lost my position, then surely I will start again to achieve the top position.

I have 4-5 keyword in the top position at first and second page and I continue with high-quality link building strategy because I don't want to lose ranking. So my suggestion is that you should continue with a higher authoritative link building strategy. And avoids lower link building techniques like link exchange, fake directories, and much more.

I once got my link ranked in the first page, it kept on going from #7 to #4 to #1 eventually, all in 1 day and I thought it would remain like that. I did nothing. Only social media traffic. I did nothing that's why my link is on the 3rd page now

The answer is partial 'No'.
Over recent updates, SEOs are induced to stop building spammy, low-quality links like comment backlinks, forum postings, RSS feed submission, social bookmarking etc.

What I think is, minimizing the number of links and maximizing link velocity and quality is what should be done. I'm also on my way.

Anyway, you should always keep building links. What kind of links, it depends on the keyword volume, competitiveness and other factors, but remember, if you stop building links it does not mean your competitor did the same so if you want to stay at top 3, update your content to latest trends and keep building links on a slower pace. If you back then did 100 PBN links per week, now it should be ok with 100 pbn links per month (just an example).

So after you have reached top 3, the best thing would be to make that position stronger, by getting authority links, guest posts and a lot of real social shares

If you have very good content then you will usually start to attract links naturally when you rank near the top, so you can slow down building yourself. It depends how important that no.1 spot is to you.
