I have to say, most what's being said in this thread are sweeping generalizations. Social media does affect us greatly (research the psychological effects), but do remember that it takes a certain type of video to go viral. Don't let these viral videos speak for the entire nation.
There comes a time when certain topics of discussion become media hype and that usually should be an indicator to look into the deeper intricacies that surround that particular topic.
these events based on personal accounts that a lot a sharing, can't be used to decipher a conclusion on an entire population, that's nonsense.
Yes, these events do happen where people would rather record something on video, (hell it even happens where I live in Toronto, Canada) but how about those times when people help and we don't know about it?
A video of a guy stopping on the street to help someone change a tire ins't going to go viral; think about it.
What I'm drawing at is; social media for the most part is a view of the world through a specific lens. It can be shaded be bias, untruth, exaggeration, or merely misinterpretation.
Like Public Enemy once said; Don't believe the hype.
Think for yourself and do some deeper research into matters that you allegedly care so much about.

i have lived in lots of places around the world, every city / town has its areas that you have to be a little more careful than other areas, this is just the way it is. Just a matter of looking and learning, taking some time in a place to see what happens at different times of day and night. Little bit of the local language makes things safer everywhere in my opinion

Moscow is not that friendly city ,but inner parts of Russia where i lived border to Germany most people are post war veteran so they value life

Language is a strong weapon when you use your language well ( I went there in my teenage so my brain was open to learn a new language i have learnt it very well) ofc there are bad people also ,you dont go to certain places after the dark thats it,other public places its safe ,couple of years back moscow was not safe went in hands of bandits Putin dealt it very cleverly,eliminated all of them so other bandits does not touch foreigners.strange places for an Indian

basic pay is low then India ,but i think everyone gets what they need from government electricity ,clean water,good public transport,free education for all and calm place with less pollution,clean(cant even compare with india,belarus,minsk is the most clean i have seen)

I'm currently moving to Portugal: The country is really safe, one of the reasons I go there.
I'm from Holland/Germany and also here people make selfies and vids while others are on the edge of dead. A few weeks ago someone was resuscitated and those stupid kids making selfies and Instagram stories of it..
