We use .Net, the browser we use is based in the gecko engine used before by Firefox and we have the option to not load images, when that option is set we set the browser with "permissions.default.image=2" that is what Firefox says to block images.
If you using always the same site and image sources you can block those images in the windows host file

Proxies are better than vps, you can use more threads simultaneous. I would go with some backconnect proxies, since they offer bigger number of proxies for the price
