Dear dicktwat SEO practicioners,

Currently trying to grow my business. Just met up with another potential client today. I'm starting to notice a pattern.

Every potential client I talk to has had bad experiences with "SEO guys". It's like they're damaged girls from abusive relationships.

Every person I met up with so far has paid at least one (and many times multiple) bullshit SEO company. These companies spam email and play with business owners emotions and make false promises and then take their money and do nothing.

I've seen their reports. They'll go and take screenshots to show businesses that they're #1 for terms that get zero search volume.

Ludicrous long-tails and hyper-specific terms like:

"dentist main ave new york ny john doe dental zip code 07031"

Like, duh - of course you're gonna rank #1 when the query has almost every piece of information possible about the business...

These dickwad SEO companies don't care about results, but only the appearance of results while they softly dismiss concerns with false promises and bullshit explanations about how "SEO is a long game".

They just churn and burn. They promise these business owners the world and trap these (usually) conflict-averse people into 6-month contracts, get them no results and offer no communication or consolation. Then neither the business nor the SEO companies attempt to renew because you both know that results are nonexistent.

It makes me sick.

Some of these business owners work their whole lives to get into a good position and you try to jump on their backs and start sucking away like the leeches you are.

They rely on their business to put food on the table and put kids through college and shit and you just play with their business for a little extra cash.

And the "do-nothing" guys aren't even the worst people.

You also have the companies that try to employ a full-on blackhat strategy on mom-and-pop businesses.

You run the risk of vaporizing their entire web presence. You might as well be playing Russian roulette with them (while skipping yourself, of course). Just hand em the gun and have them keep pulling. There's no consequences for you, right? You got that web services contract you downloaded yesterday - you'll be good.

If this reads like a rant, it's 'cause it is. I am just stunned at how irresponsible these SEOs are, and also how irresponsible these business owners are for hiring these guys. I guess their promises and presentation work. But it's fucking up proper SEO guys who actually want to help.

Sincerely,

-whiz

p.s. This rant is not directed at people who actually give it their all and try to rank businesses legitimately and fail. That is ok. You tried. Not all investments pay off.

But if you are intentionally deceiving, you are a piece of shit. You can rationalize it any way you want. Unless the cartel has your child and you thought SEO was the quickest way to get them the money you owe, I have no sympathy for you.

If you are making an attempt at an SEO business, do it with nobility, honesty, and a desire to truly help. If you want to sell snake-oil, enjoy your short term spoils before you fall back into the life you're trying to run from.

Stable, long-term results don't happen from fucking as many SMBs you can find.

I've seen people post on here and other forums where they are clueless about seo and are basically experimenting on paying clients sites, then come onto a forum to ask advice.

awesome rant

Thanks. I just write on BHW to get my thoughts out in a structured way - the benefit is that I can see if I'm completely insane or if other people feel the same.

Also, it sometimes helps other people and hopefully makes the world 0.000001% better.

My friend has just started doing some seo for local business round here. after years of running his own sites, he’s partnered up with another guy .. and nearly every single customer they get is actually trying to undo a previously purchased bad seo job lol..

maybe that’s a business angle..

we undo shitty seo you’ve been sold

I am guilty of it, and part of this letter is addressed to the asshole "past me".

But peoples' livelihoods are very serious and shouldn't be fucked with.

If I could go back I'd probably get a job at an SEO agency before fucking around. Or do stuff on your own first.

Every business owner I've talked to so far is either way some shit company or has worked with one.

The one I talked to today is working with (2) SEO companies at once, paying them both.

I'm so confused.

What's even more confusing is that neither has access to the website. So they didn't even do any on-page. Maybe just blasted with links. Or did nothing at all.

They ain't ranking for anything important. They probably send the BS report showing them that they're ranking on Yahoo and YouTube for "best bar with 384 square feet of space and free billiards".

I asked for the Wordpress login and they gave me the login to a Squarespace site lol. I think they're paying two different "web-management" companies as well (dat maintenance tho).

They have two websites up simultaneously. I'm just so confused.

a great man once said: don't hate the player, hate the game :)

the seo game is a big bitch, let's face it people do any old tactic to get someone to rank in 30 days. true rankings take months even years.

problem is many business owners don't want to wait that long. they want instant gratification then regret it later (like the chick who dates hot guys then regrets it because he ghosts on her)

Meet in the client in person!
There are a few shitty SEO's in western countries and by meeting them in person you wipe out the dross SEO from India and Pakistan and other third world countries.

I'd like to add that establishing a little trust/rapport before attempting the sale will increase your chances of $$$ tenfold.

You will likely make more $$$ with less effort and uncomfortability (is that a word?)

Well said. The Freelance programming market has this too! Lots of hobbyists / "people messing around" like you said,But in a way it creates opportunities for professionals. It is unfortunate but in a way there is a silver lining.

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. ~ Arthur C. Clarke

In my experience, most business owners in need of web/seo services are older and slow to adopt new technologies, so they make zero attempt to understand what the internet can do for their business. And since nearly every other industry follows a standard of 'more is better', then it's obviously better to buy more websites, more SEO, more spam blasts, etc.

There's seriously good money to be made by specializing in these type of clients and undoing the damage, though you might have to take some creative measures to stop them from buying every "SEO" service that lands in their spambox.

uncomfortability

I believe the word you are looking for is “uncomfortness”. But what the f* do I know. I’m not a native English writer, neither am I an SEO. But I did manage to f* up my on page SEO.

Luckily for me there is this great guy here on BHW who actually knows what he is doing and he doesn’t f* around.

I still owe @tiiberius some major props for saving my asseo...

I feel bad for the clients who paid $700 for a logo made using an online logo generator.

I can understand we all need money and constantly learn to be up-to-date, but this kind of gambling with someone else business, it's just wrong on all levels.

This apply to all business my friend some are good and other are bad.
Even here on bhw guys rocks with illustrator but suck for ranking a website.
It's the human nature...
