#1 Biggest Mistake Online Start-up eCommerce Stores Make

Undestood. Thank you!
I would also consider the place of advertisement. Demographic groups of course differ in the places they visit. As such, the placement of your ad on specific funnels could also cater to your product

great tip! makes a lot of sense.

how do you measure if a specific sub niche have enough demand? through google trend + logic or is there a more accurate way to measure that?

That's a good question, but your kind of looking at it backwards, which is what a lot of people do.

Trends are a bit different. Trends are trying to predict something and that is not the easiest way to start a business. It is a lot easier (and cheaper) if you are a little behind the curve, picking up the crumbs of the big boys and in evergreen niches.

Then getting lots of crumbs means you end up with your own big pie without the risk.

The single most important thing is how are you going to drive targeted traffic to your store, because without targeted traffic you don't have a business.

So the first thing you have to figure out is where are you going to get the traffic from.

The point of drilling down to a sub niche is that makes it obvious which traffic to target.

Once you have done that, just use keyword tools as if you were doing seo to determine demand and look at how many relevant social media profiles you can buy shoutouts from. When you do that demand levels become obvious. But core niches never die you just need to drill down to a sub niche and give it your own spin.

@GringoMonkey
Makes complete sense. The only problem that I read a lot is that FB ads won't give good results if the audience size is too small. For e.g. Voice Teacher on FB for US has audience size of 152K.

Please throw some light on the small audience size of specific sub-niche.

Nice post. Makes total sense to me, especially when it comes to marketing and advertising for your store. After all, the more targeted you can make your ads, and the more refined your target audience the higher your conversion rate is going to be.

You can always try instagram influencers, if you dont feel facebook is appropriate for your sub-niche.

A number of people have asked me would I "advise them" on building/running their own store.

Under the terms of BHW I cannot do that unless you set up a joint venture.

However, I am happy to take a look at your site and give you some pointers.

Thanks a lot for all the info, can I PM you my website?

it might sound like simple advice but its actually helpful, i did the same and lost due to bigger competitors but going down into a more specific niche might have worked out for me. Thanks!!

Great post.

I see a lot of people wondering why generalized shops don't work for them.

You have to brand. The customer should feel like the site was made just for them; it should align with who they identify with as a person

You should be able to describe your target customer like a close friend, down to the hobbies they have, their age group, where they shop, their political views, etc.

A lot of people start with the product first when they should be starting with a specific person and then working backwards from that.

For instance:

Adam
22-30
Bachelor
Major US cities
Liberal-leaning
Loves to eat out at late-night diners
Loves to hike
Loves Starbucks
etc.etc.

The more info you have, the more a product/service just jumps out at you. Then you can select your product/service or design your product/service by asking

"Would Adam like this?"
"How can I make this better for Adam?"
etc.etc.

You can also gather feedback directly from Adam through surveys, polls, forum posts, etc.

This type of "posterboy creation" also has the added benefit of making marketing easy, especially with platforms like Facebook where you can market directly to Adam by creating an audience with the specifications listed above.

P.S. I'm not knocking people who create products first and then find their market. But it's a lot easier to sell to a pre-existing market then to generate a whole market. People have generally enjoyed the same shit for thousands of years, more or less. Anything "new" is typically an evolution of a pre-existing product/service. No need to re-invent the wheel. Just provide value to people and make them proud/happy to purchase.

@ GringoMonkey.
Thanks for the insightful post. Please, can we use this method for clickbank, shareasale or CJ products? If yes, could you please give an example?

Yes of course I actually use this method for traffic arbitrage sites, my publishing business and infact all my businesses, so yes you could use it for affiliate businesses.

To keep it simple the best way to start is to have the home page your core niche and individual product pages drilled down to the sub-niche level. You don't actually have to sell the product, you could put in an affiliate link to an amazon product if you wanted.

Obviously the advantage of you owning the product is you make more money, so with higher margins you can afford more advertising, so it is easier to scale.

Yes sure I will take a look at it.

This is true , it also reduce the amount of money spent on audience testing , if u have a tight sub-niche you already know who you are selling to ;)

i'm still finding a good sub niche, any tips? xD
