I have worked for a number of ecommerce stores over the years, some very big ones, some smaller ones and some I owned myself, now I am noticing an awful lot of threads on BHW of people starting up their own online store wondering why they are not making any sales.

A number of people have even sent me a PM asking for help. So rather than deal with them individually I thought I would create this thread, as the answer is usually the same for all.

From what I have seen the #1 Biggest Mistake Online Start-up eCommerce Stores make is they do not target a sub-niche.

Let me give an example:

Vertical = Sportswear
Category = Fitness
Sub-Category = Fashion Fitness wear

- At this point most people stop – you need a lot of money to market if you stop here, so keep going and drill down to a sub-niche

Niche = Yoga Fashion Fitness wear
Sub-niche= Yoga Fashion Fitness wear for pregnant women

Once you go right down to a sub-niche it is obvious who you should be targeting for facebook ads, Instagram shoutouts etc. Just as importantly you probably have very little competition, so you can build out your brand.

That way you get the best bang for your buck. As the #2 biggest mistake people make is they don’t have enough money to market at the sub-category level to start with.

So my advice is go right down to the sub-niche level when you start your store, then as you make a profit and have more cash to invest you can expand back up to the main niche and so on.

Excellent explanation, I'm a newbie in IM, too, but the same is true in my field, global brand marketing: it's called a "niche" for a reason!
The moment you know that you're going to have something 50% of your friends may be interested in, you'll now you get a lot of your friends buying from you, but nobody else.

Although i was using ecommerce as an example you are corrrect, targeting a sub-niche correctly could be applied to anything.

how deep into a sub niche must we go? The deeper we go the less people we appeal too

Yes the deeper you go the smaller the market but the easier it is to establish your brand, which in turn means it cost you less money to build a profitable business.

So how deep you have to go depends on your budget, the more you have the less deep you can go.The more you have the bigger the market you can appeal to. That is within your control and as you make profit you can invest more in marketing and appeal to a wider audience.

It sounds incredibly logical, but yet i wouldn't have thought of it so easy. Thanks for the post!

I think it comes down to market research and kw research.

rushing dont work , plan on paper then take action .

Follow the process I outline above and you can stack all that in your favour.
