Yes it works but be careful. Some blog comments are like spammy. But make sure do blog commenting in a relevant website which must be in your niche and must be having high DA.

A lot of comments from blogs - is clear to Google that you try to play their algorithm. (DA not matter here at all)
If they will mark your site, then any SEO work will be 10x harder than before.

Still works. Most of my site's backlinks are blog comments. I'm enjoying high rankings for many keywords as well as decent organic traffic.
But I also add Web 2.0 links and social media signals.

Yes they work but it have to be do-follo which hard to find nowadays as most of the blog no-follow tags.

Comments still work, but they are class 'B' quality links at best (if they are relevant, high authority, low OBL), class 'C' or worse if the page is low quality. As far as avoiding being treated as spam, you could work things backwards---find 5-10 quality pages with a comment section that fits your niche, then write a summary post for your site that references the 5-10 articles in combo fashion. Now you can write comments to those pages and link to your blog post, and each comment will be incontestably relevant.

It's not good idea and first step to get site marked.
In current world, most of sites use markup schema, it mean that Google exactly know which part of site it's the comments.
To know how much comments is enough and their ratio follow/nofollow - you need analyze good competitor blogs and create reference.
High deviation from this reference - it's signal for Google that you try to play their algorithm.
Also if neighbors comments linking to poor sites, it's also signal for Google, that owner don't care too much about it.
Because serious blog/blogger do not approve poor comments and sites.
As the results, those comments can more hurt your site than help.
The key here, it's to have the reference.
It's very important thing.
Most of SEO's fail here only for the reason that they haven't the reference.

No, almost all are nofollow.
I don't go around looking for d0follow blogs to comment on (if there are any, they're most likely spammed to death). If I find a blog that allows my URL to be posted, and as long as the comment section is not full of spammy links, I post a comment on it. I make sure that my comment makes sense and relevant to the article. I find that asking a question will increase the chance of my comment being approved. After all, bloggers love to be asked because they want to feel like an authority.
I've probably commented on more than 100 blogs and now have more than 30,000 backlinks pointing to my site. Almost all are nofollow. My site is slowly increasing in traffic and rankings. Even my new articles get ranked in the first page after 2 weeks or so.
My site backlinks are probably about 90% blog comments. The rest are links from other websites (a few bloggers linked to my articles) and Web 2.0 (Quora, Tumblr, etc.)

That's what I did. Although my website is 8 months old but uses an expired domain.
I just wrote content and then commented on other blogs for backlinks.
My site is regularly beating out more established websites in Google. Either my blog comments backlinks are effective or my competitors have weak SEO.
For me, blog comments are still effective. Depends on the niche and competition maybe. More difficult niches might need more powerful backlinks.

It's still working, but you have to be careful. Do not use any software to do more harm than benefit. Everything work only manually, be persistent and you'll see results!
