I always believe that on-page seo is the first step for ranking your page on top.

By Seo on page do you mean seo for elements that aren't always visible that show up only on certain conditions ? (like pre-seo for invisble content) ?

by on page seo I meant content optimization, image alt text, title tag, meta description and meta tags.

Through trial & error, testing new things, learning from external sources, networking with other people investing big into SEO and learning that way too.

Also viewing Google as a business (which they are) which helps guide the way you build links & presuming what the future will be. Putting yourself in Google's perspective can help PRESUME what the future may hold.

Yeah, what factors will play a role. It wasn't so hard to presume that Google will start "punishing" websites that are filled with ads and made purely to make money instead of give value to the user. That the CTR on Google affects/will affect even more. Favoring big sites over thin ones more and more and so forth.

To simplify, Google is a business and in order for it to be a successful search engine it needs to make sure that their visitors (aka money $$$) are very satisfied with the user experience and search results they are presented. Go to your site, and ask yourself honestly "Will Google LOVE to show this website to its users or not?" and if not, ask yourself "Why" and go deeper. Analyze. But again, you can only presume what Google will be changing in their algorithm but I'd much rather plan ahead & presume stuff rather than do things completely blindly.
