Any affiliate program can be used. Amazon is just the most common one and it converts well.
If you got content then sure. News sites work very well. Niche specific sites too.

A word of advice, try and check out where the majority of users in the subreddit are from. I put up a link for Amazon.com and it turns out that by and large its people in Canada that use the subreddit. The result was over 100 clicks, but no sales because it wasn't the Canadian Amazon.

The system definitely works though and highly recommend, especially after making a sale today exclusively through this method.
