So about every other month I see an account blow up very quickly and then I’m a few days they shut down.
9/10 times these accounts are scam accounts pretending to be some popular brand that everyone seems to be into.
Usually these accounts promote some type of offer usually involving money or a free product. Mostly all of them involve you tagging them in your story and following them. They fill you with the false illusion that you will be getting something in return.
Here is an example of an account:
As seen above this account is posing as Urban Outfitters a popular clothing brand here in the US. They are offering to send you free clothing if you follow them, post to your story, and comment.
Many of these accounts rack up thousands of likes and comments on their posts and also have an insane amount of followers. I checked their engagement rate and it is a staggering 60%. I went through their followers and was not able to find one bot or spammy looking account. Every follower seemed to be active and a fan of urban outfitters. When I checked how many followers they had an hour ago it was at ~6,000 now it is at 7,860 IN LESS THAN 30 MINUTES!
Many of these accounts are then renamed and then sold for an insane amount of money because of the highly specific audience they were able to achieve.
My question is how can this be? How do they gain so much traction in so little time. In the photo above they only follow 4 people andmentions above they don’t seem to have bought any followers either... I know many in the community probably know how it is done and I would greatly appreciate it if you could share with us how!
