I first learned that SEO was a thing on a nerdcore hip-hop forum because everyone glorified spamming and people would even use the forum to rank low-competition keywords.
Professionally, I started off working for a company that sold Amazon stuff for six months. I looked at materials from CPC Strategy, read the original Google academic papers, and learned a bit about natural language processing and linguistics.
When I got my current gig at a giant e-commerce site about a year ago, I started reading Moz and Search Engine Journal. I had the company get a SEMRush subscription and I learned a lot by fixing the technical errors from the crawler. I also learned a lot from going through the backlinks and researching why I had to disavow most of them.
I would probably do it again in reverse order. However, I'd come back here instead of the nerdcore forum because it was mostly shitposting.

Learned about SEO by following a guide on how to start a wordpress pornographic website for money (because sex sells was the logic) that mentioned SEO (indirectly) and other such terms (backlinks, on-page, content, keywords, long-tail keywords, etc) tied to running a website successfully.
From there, it was only natural to google everything else using common sense (curiosity helped).
I started the first (grey-hat) website based on that tutorial and learned about SEO on the side as I went. Soon I realized I had done a lot of the things wrong (here's the site - saunaxxx . com - it'll be up until August 2018)
For some context:
I've now got 2 new (non-pornographic, whitehat) sites (older one 3 months, newer one 2 months old), both of them skyrocketed past the 1st site in terms of traffic and possibilities within the 1st month because I actually did stuff intentionally based on what I had learned, starting from planning things through to applying things that make sense the most (still learning, of course, but now it's more like small quality of life tweaks rather than new concepts entirely).

The guide wasn't wrong or bad, it was simply too vague for a total newbie like I was. The guide should be up somewhere on BeerMoneyForum . com along with my journey of that site (saunaxxx . com - "Adult Tube Website - starting point 7th of August"). The porn site might be aesthetically pleasing, but it's a malfunctioning shotgun when it comes to SEO. ^^

seo not hard at all it all easy .(* just need to learn the basics and then let it all sink in with some advance info and more study.
first study (( idiot seo guide book ))
that will teach you all the onpage basics and a little html code.
then you need to get deeper
learn about domain and stats .
then learn about backlinks and there power with stats .
then learn about socail web 2.0 websites .
then learn about exspired domain and content .
study niche keywords
study seo content
know go and look at a website with a audit application , with the above knowlauage you can out beat anybody website .

everythink i have said is the thorey of a good seo exspert ,afther your a exspert use a wp plugin called yoast to do all the seo with yoast settings .
it will take time and months upon months learning everthink above , and keeping up as seo changes a lot ,as time go on.
eventually when you grasp the understanding of seo , your be able to look at a website and no ,what you need to beat them to be at number 1 in the serps.
seo use to be free with swapping links and link sharing , but these days good links you need to pay for , so exspect to have some cash for the odd link or two or three to help the website to get at number 1.

you learn the basics via a book like "" idiot guide of seo"" you then learn more deep indepth pratices to index websites.
seo about trail and error it takes some people months to learn becouse the learning dont stop as it seo ....
moz is a subject on it own and there loads of subjects that make seo up to understand .
a domain is a subject on it own becouse the right domain can get you to the top of google just as a domain.

Just by "doing it" trial and error. I'll always will be probably learning something new... or learning how to get around new algos and such but that's the game. I've been doing it for awhile though. Started off a long time ago with some white hat sites, which turned grey hat then pushed the envelope further. Some stuff you may not really get until you actually sit down and do it. I have project sites setup where I test out new strategies.
There's probably less most people have to know now a days as there's a service for everything. Links, audits, domains, websites, social media...etc

what you said so true i think the good old days learning from bottom helps to no the subject deep.
this way your never have to ask anythink only when chages happen .
mastering html and onpage seo is a must.
comparing a website to the comp is a must
application are good but doing it the old ways via seeing it and counting the words altering the html without apps helps master seo, when learning seo theory .
using apps from beging to end wont teach you seo will just help you get indexed heigh in the serps.
if you want to learn seo need to go back to mastering html , then keyword research, domain info ect ect ect manually.
but if you want to be a wannabe can just learn yoast ...... but you no seo exspert
