Recent Google Update: What's Your Opinion On This?

guys - to be on the safe side, go to your google webmaster tools / sitemap / on the right side, you will see 3 sections: all content type, web pages, images.

click on web pages and you will see the trend line for both submitted and indexed. this is a 30 day view. here is what I did:

may 17th: yoast / media section / made "Show Media in search results?" NO
Redirect attachment URLs to the attachment itself? was set to NO as well.
Had google fetch my website again

May 21st: number of indexed pages went from 325 to 174 and images went from 282 to 132

May 22nd: ranking for few keywords increased

so what I am trying to say is this: do not just rely on making some modifications in yoast, make sure you see the result in google sitemap section. also, having google fetch your side would not hurt after your modifications

p.s. now, I have "Redirect attachment URLs to the attachment itself?" as yes, which hides the option for ""Show Media in search results?". also, I have installed https://wordpress.org/plugins/attachment-pages-redirect/ (source: https://www.seoblog.com/2018/04/wordpress-attachment-hurt-seo/)
will let you kow what changes I notice
I don't understand something, if you set "Redirect attachment URLs to the attachment itself?" as yes you need the plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/attachment-pages-redirect/ ?

My site was affected but it recovered in about a week without doing much. Not really sure what the update was about.

I read somewhere (forget where), that the update was regarding guest posts. I think it was penalising sites who had links from obvious guest post sites. If you've still had a negative impact, have you been paying for guest posts?

For the sites that got hit, they haven't had any guest posts made for them. The rankings are now back and better than what they were before.

That's good then. Maybe a shuffle due to some of those sites being penalised. I had a bit of a drop too, but they've come back to be better overall.

My keywords dancing from 9 May.

I lost rankings for some good keywords, they losed path ,now they rankks at category page.. for example:

mysite.com/category/post-name , now google found kw only on mysite.com/category...

Other keywords are on right post, but some dancing, or they are going from pos 5-7 to 8 page...

The update wasn't related to links at all from what I saw so far.

Update: 24 hours after I saw one page drop for numerous keywords (mentioned in my other post) it was back either in its normal spots or higher in several cases. Other sites also increased slightly too. I made zero changes to the affected page whilst it had dropped.

Hello together,

this is my first post. I am in seo business since 2003. I saw alot of updates and I lost a few sites over the last 15 years but with 1 project I had never problems.
The linkprofile was 100% natural. Very strong links from newspapers, edu and other high trust sites. The page is 10 years old and I had no problems with that page over the last 10 years. Every update makes this site stronger. The page has 50 articles with arround > 2000 words and a community / forum with over 1 Mio posts.

I lost 50-60% of my traffic since 19.5. I think the update startet at 18.5 and was completed on 25.5.

This has definatly nothing todo with yoast. I dont use it. For me this update looks like a penalty from early days ( your remember the 20+, 50+ etc). Some keys moved from Page 1 to Page 3 and 4, while others are still on the first page. The pages that are gone have direct links but very old links. A few with hard anchor but like I said, all natural.

Thoughts:

- Too many ads on the page?
- The page missed links, maybe Google reset the Backlinks / Backlink update?
- I had a big profit from the macabee update in December

I hope this page come back anytime. I put so much work in the project, unbelievable...this is so depressing. I thought with this project I do everything right and now I am toasted...

I don't think it has to do with affiliate links or ads because my competition has more links then I do.

The only possible thing on my site are the ads. My competition has also ads but maybe they are stronger so the filter does not hit them. There must be any trigger marker and when you reach the critical point, you are hammerd.

Ryker, do you have ads/links of different networks/partners or just one (e.g. Amazon only)? The update, from my impression, seems to be along the lines of what Google considers "thin", irrespective of the quality/amount of content itself.

Thank you very much for your quick reply. I have NO Amazon links. I have only Google Adsense and TKP Banners. Maybe its not declared as "thin", when there are no ads. But "thin" and "ads" are evil?

The articles are fine but in the forum are a lot of topics with thin content. But this topics are all noindex since 2012. When a topic doestn reach a max word char, we mark it automaticly with noindex. Just to be on the save side, because I know already how panda works.

Its kind weired, that some articles moved from page 1 to page 3 and other articles are still on page 1. Maybe google removed only the "big" keys where more as X searches are each day?

2 weeks before the update we placed a 160x600 banner. This was the only thing we did in the html over the last years. We already removed that static banner but till now, the site is down.

My kids asked me a couple of minutes ago, "dad, why are you so quiet and sad in the last days?".... I told them, imagine you build a big tower in your childroom for many years and you are very proud of..and then you come back in and the tower is destroyed. You dont know why and you dont know who did this...ok in this case I know who...

pffff

I think in the same way as you. Google did some new "thin rules". For example when a page has more then X Ads, doestn matter amazon, adsense, tkp etc, and the content is not big enough, then HIT.

I wait now for 2 weeks and when the page doestn come back, I do a complete restyle with less ads. But I cant do this in 1 month, I need arround 3-6 month to take care of every single task, because the community is very big.

Your approach for the forum (noindex for thin/short/mostly empty topics) is certainly best practice. The interesting thing: You description pretty much matches what we see with one really old site. Ranked very well for years, wasn't changed at all (apart from https in early 2017 and a fully responsive redesign in 2016) since it's a static niche, evergreen content, so there are no news, nothing to write about that wasn't already written about on the site. Still strong page 1 rankings for quite a few competitive terms, still has like 10k visitors daily, but it lost a lot of longtails (like thousands of rankings moved from page 1 to 2+) with less competition, translating to a 70% drop in traffic. The whole SERPs in this niche significantly changed, popular general magazines with really short articles took over, including slightly related subpages of big brands that mention a keyword, but aren't straight on topic, weird results overall.

The two main competitors suffered, too, were hit even harder, but they are a lot heavier on ads, like 2-3 times more ads.

The site had survived Penguin without a scratch, was never touched by Panda, never showed any negative reaction to any update in the last years, never got any manual action. Constantly gained/earned links without buying anything, including links from a few universities, no spam, no negative SEO. Sure, sometimes moved a bit up and down, but the average volatility was like 2 positions up/down from time to time for most keywords with some odd exceptions. Basically stable for half a decade, now went significantly down.

Last but not least: It's not Wordpress, so no Yoast, it has only pages indexed that should be indexed, it's perfectly fine on mobile, loads really fast, 100% https without a single broken lock, low bounce rate, average visitor stays on site for like 9 minutes.

bs

I read that there was an update about website speed, basically google algorithm is now giving more importance to website speed on mobile. Not sure if it's related to this.
