Recent Google Update: What's Your Opinion On This?

Want to update... I built my site from scratch by hand, no yoast, no plugins. 3 out of 4 of my money pages got toasted. The other page got hit, but not crushed. I also have another shitty site that was unaffected. It is the same template built from scratch. So i dont think this update has anything to do with CMS, theme, yoast plugin, etc.

Now after about 8 days, 2 of the 3 pages that got hammered recovered 80%. They originally dropped from page 2 to 15. And they reappeared on page 4 today. I didn't do anything in the past few days.

Lets keep sharing data so we can try to figure out what the hell we can do to recover.

Sounds like you have a key to understand what is going on. There have to be some differences between the two site. It's starting to sound like a content issue?

I don't think it has to do with affiliate links or ads because my competition has more links then I do. I even have a shitty site with more affiliate links and ads (above the fold) that did not get hurt.

I have been recovering some more today.
Conclusion: Site 1 and 2 got hit. Site 1 started to drop by a little at the 10 may and at the 18th got hit hard and in one straight down push. Site 2 started to go down harder at the 10th and did drop in a few increments from 12-14 may until it hit rock bottom.
18th May I read up and updated the yoast settings on both sites. This was mid-day and site 1 and 2 both had a push upwards in the serp on the 19th and today 20th they've gone up by a bit more. I am still down 350pos for site 1 and 1k pos for site 2, but it looks a lot better. Even if site 1 mainly had top 3 positions for all the main and secondary keywords and is getting very little traffic back with a bump back up to page 2-4. x.X

Just my two cents. I'll keep you posted on how this evolves and meantime I will be writing a lot of more informational non-affiliate link content and news just to make the sites look even more solid.

are your sites mobile friendly? how is the load speed compared to your competition?

My sites are mobile friendly. It's not super fast, nor is it slow. Theres a page in the too ten that is from 2016 that takes 18 seconds to fully load on mobile

To me it look a bit like they reversed the update they did in early march, the sites I see dropping are the sites that went up in early march and now returned to the "old" positions.

I can see only option - Redirect attachment URLs to the attachment itself

Sites usually get hit when there is an update but most recover without doing anything. Just the way things are. Best to relax and get to understand what the issue may be instead of jumping into fixing things.

The Yoast issue isn't related to these drops, it's certainly not helpful, but non-Wordpress sites were affected the same way at about the same time. Would be nice if the solution would be that easy, but unfortunately it isn't for sure.

Got to disagree from what I am seeing. I had a sudden drop from top 10 to 80-100 for a bunch of keywords across all my sites. I read this post 3 days ago, re-configured Yoast, re-submitted sitemap and fetch for each site, including links from home page. 3 days later and my SERPs are returning to nearly normal. Not quite as good as before but I expect that to change over the next 7 days.

So on the basis that I did nothing to each of these sites (10+ sites), I have to attribute this to thin content. This would effect other sites which are not using Yoast.
