Why do you use Keyword Difficulty estimation tools?

Keyword difficulty estimators like KWFinder, Keysearch and KeywordRevealer are some of the online tools I've used over the last year, year and a half, for my website (no blog, just a simple HTML/CSS website).

I keep seeing the SEO communities generally frown upon this type of tool as they lack the power of ahrefs and the likes. Some argue that one of the main flaws is related to them using MOZ ranking factors in the calculations. Many consider the DA to be useless.

And now it seems like you can use ahrefs one week for 7$ trial indefinitely by switching emails all the time.

So why is it that people here still use these cheaper tools? It can't be because of the price alone, what can they do that makes you use them and not go exclusively to ahrefs?

Ahrefs KW ratings are stupid, plain and simple. Kwfinder and Ahrefs are much better. You need to use a variety of tools when doing research, as well as common sense.

Is it really a problem for them? Maybe everyone thinks they're being so smart and ahrefs are probably doing it on purpose to get people to pay 28$/month? Is there a chance this is true?

I'm sure companies go for their full plan without a care anyway.

A variety is a good method, if you can afford more, I would advise to go for it. Personally, I have tried a bunch including Moz, Majestic, Ahrefs and smaller services and KWfinder has given me the closest match to the actual difficulty I have had in ranking for the keywords I settled on.

However, these tools are not enough. You need to look at the top 10 results and do some background research on each result to see if you can actually rank. I personally use AHrefs for this part.

PA is one of the most important ranking factors, and it's about 40% of what the KWFinder formula is based on (among other Moz metrics). As flawed as it is, with some experience and common sense KWFinder can be a useful tool to ditch the high comp keywords and hand pick the good ones. Definitely not the best tool when it comea to generating keyword ideas though.
