Dude, you're simply wrong. I was taught English 20 years ago, got the degree at the time with score on the top 1/10.000 - I still remember the "Dear X," on the letter. I don't use it because NOW on not-so-formal settings is cringe-worthy, but they are right. It's used and it's taught.

It's a cultural thing I have been told. I have been told it's their way of showing respect, they think they are saying something along the lines of sir or madam is one way it was described to me also its said like a letter is written so when you think about it, it does make sense. By they I mean people from India and I certainly don't mean it in a derogatory way. I really don't think they realize it's something an old woman would say to her grandchild but like someone else pointed out, there are worse things to be called

Sometimes, I get subtle threats from people like "watch your back, dear..." or "you'll get what's coming to you, sir..."

Are these respectful threats or is it their way of being sarcastic?

It's totally non native english speaking people. I'm not sure what english course they are taking that teaches them this, or maybe they have learned on their own as in school we were taught to start a letter with Dear, Mr blah blah. It's hard to say where they picked it up, however, try to understand that they don't hang around english speaking people all day everyday and they don't know the little nuances of the language. Also consider the fact that they deserve respect in the fact that they are doing all they can with what they have where they are. Instead of bitching that they say it, send them a message and guide them on how to better start a conversation in order to get better results.

In this state one could easily tell how careful your should be - as this seem threat in disguise .

I think it’s easy to tell when these words are used to show some respects and when need to watch out - just like the examples you gave.

Guys, I'm not referring to how a formal letter is started. Dear John letters are not the issue. I understand THAT formality.

Here's my concern..
