Choosing a domain name for a specific city centric website?

I'm starting to clarify something. What kind of a domain which would be effective for a specific city centric website.

Ex: lets just say, If I do target london would it be london.com or london.co.uk would rank better? (mere example)

It doesn't really matter which TLD you go with. Results will be the same with either of them.

In this case you take the .co.uk which is the country extension for the UK, which in addition makes it more authentic looking; likewise paris.fr but chicago.com; so it depends but mostly at the country level, not city level.
Nowadays you can even use the .london extension, so if you want a fancy domain name take whatever.london, if this is really focused on London.

rule of thumb is to use the tld/server to the area/city so I would use london.co.uk and a local server or one in the uk at least.

It depends on your niche that you use. So TLD doesn't matter for ranking or any other purpose. But if the TLD is in .london, it would be effective than others when you go to a targeted city.

Hmm.. tho generic TLDs like com net org work everywhere, I would still use the country TLD if this was my target to rank. Google is going more personal with serp results, adopting device, browser, location (ip), previous preferences and more to show the individual those results on serp that should get interest. Searching local stuff on google i see my country TLD popping up the most. Another thing is trust, I believe swedish people would click more on .se business than a com domain if they are looking for a local biz, makes more sense. In your example i would use co.uk for a London based local business trying to rank there.
