After having made nearly 40 linkwheel structures of varying sizes and patterns, I just read the original linkwheel PDF for the first time. If the author did indeed come up with the concept, then I salute him. In this case, I am sure I would not have heard about the concept if it were not for him.

However, going through the PDF, there is a lot left out and a lot of oversimplification. It's more of a "guide for dummies" than a complete guide to linkwheels. If you're brand new to the concept, it's a good read. Intermediate and advanced users will need more information.

This is the most important thing to remember with linkwheels:

Their power comes from relevant linking in the text body on trusted web 2.0 platforms, not link juice or PR. The properties may rank themselves due to residual trust from the web 2.0 service, but the juice flow from the property or your money site and the other properties is extremely inefficient and/or negligible. Later in the game, after they have been charged with 20 high PR backlinks, then they'll have a juice effect and the wheel will begin to cycle this juice power.

Linkwheels vary depending on what you are trying to do

a) Trying to dominate the front page (easy)
b) Trying to increase the rank of your money site (quite hard)
c) Trying to send targetted traffic to the money site through the web 2.0 properties (quite hard)

You've got to think about which of these aims you want to achieve. For me, it is (a). Going by what I read on the forum though, (b) and (c) seem to be what most people want.

Anyway, there are some basic changes that I would make to the PDF.

1) Six properties is not enough. For reasons shrouded in the mysterious fluctuations of Google love for various web 2.0 properties and their internal linkjuice flow structures, some web 2.0 sites will make it onto the front page for a keyword and some will not - and you can never know until you try. Sometimes Hubpages is there straight away. Sometimes it's Jimdo. Sometimes it's nothing at-all until you've built backlinks. Either way, you need to sure up the numbers.

I would imagine that people only using six properties is the reason why there are so many "help my linkwheel isnt working" threads.

2) Each property can have 3 links: LWx, LWy and Money site. Four links or even 5 can be good if you're trying to confuse Google.

3) Never perform reciprocal linking on the properties. This is shown at several points in the PDF.

4) I would call my linkwheels successful and I have never bothered with RSS feeds or social bookmarking. Not to say that they don't work, I just never bothered. High PR comment spam from unrelated sites will do the job.

5) To achieve (a), content is for Google only. Low quality, machine spun with keyword injection. To achieve (c), content is for humans and will take a lot of time or money.

Thant's all the springs to mind at the moment and I'm busy but there is a lot more to cover.

I'm not a pro or even would I consider my self a noob in this department, I'm lower, but I would say why not.

Looks like link wheels major effect, is dominating the first page of google for your keywords.

Micallef, do you continuously add backlinks to your Linkwheels, do you stop adding them when you reach a certain number?

So far, I keep adding backlinks as an ongoing process. But that said, when I reach as many linkwheels as you have, I can't imagine still adding backlinks for them all...

I just cycle through all my wheels and keep going. However, when a single property has 10 or more backlinks, it gets put in the low priority queue. Newer wheels need the links more urgently.

When I find a new domain which offers easy links, I get one high PR link from it for each wheel, which usually exhausts the backlink source.

When I find that a property is ranking, I'll stick something like this at the top in bold:

"You can get a trial of *product* for free by clicking here", with "here" as the aff link. Generally they stick, although with wordpress.com, you need to use tinyurl.

My keywords tend to be things that people are already looking to buy. I don't do persuasion or a sales pitch at the momet.

Six properties is not enough, what would you recommend?

If you want to have a really good shot at success, I wouldn't dip below 12.

I'm not familiar with that specific term, but I believe I know what you're describing.

Basically, a large group of website owners (or a single person with a large number of sites) get together and agree to share links. However, rather than simply exchange links (which Google doesn't value all that highly), these website owners agree to one-way link to each other.

WebsiteA.com links to WebsiteB.com.

WebsiteB.com links to WebsiteC.com

WebsiteC.com links to...(lots and lots of websites and then) WebsiteZ.com.

WebsiteZ.com links back to WebsiteA.com.

Every site gets a one-way link. If there are enough sites in the wheel, and if the wheel is manipulated carefully, you can build dozens of links to your site.

The advantage in this scheme is that you get a lot of one-way links from a lot of different websites relatively quickly. The disadvantage is that if Google (or Yahoo or Bing) catches on to your trick, they will penalize your website. Because the people that advertise a link wheel usually aren't clever enough to manage one properly, anyone who joins a wheel will get burned at some point.

SO, rather than join a link wheel, I would recommend you go about getting links the old fashioned way. First, build great content. Second, get lots of links to that content using directory submission, press releases, article submission, video submission, building a social network, etc.

It's harder than a wheel, but it's not going to get you penalized and ruin whatever value your site has.

So out of curiosity can you attack more then 1 keyword per link wheel?

Second is if I want to have multiple link wheels attacking different key words can they all be pointing to the same money site?

If you can't have them all attacking the same money site, is it possible to make a sub domain to your money site as a redirect. For example http://keyword.moneysite.com or could I use different domains that actually redirect to the same money site?

If anyone could help me out with this, it would be greatly appreciated.

HAHA the "Linkwheel" first started in 1994, i put my site in it in 1998. It took a week to build a spoke, because the details had to be passed by email. Amazingly it still exists today, although a lot of the sites in the wheel are broken.

The inkwheel concept started no doubt long before Howie learned to turn a PC on.
