If you are trying to rank for a somewhat competitive keyword, you will definitely need links. Dont listen to all the bs that you can rank with content alone, you definitely need quality backlinks.

You can sometimes rank for easy to medium keywords if you have a lot of content on site (from my own testing). A lot of content means 100-200+ optimised articles. The more the better. They can be 400-500 words each no need for 1000+ words.
