1and1 Experience, Anyone else? - Don't Recommend

Yeah terrible experience. Their contract garbage is a complete joke. I transferred the one domain I had with them and cancelled. Won't touch their services ever again and tell everyone to stay far away. They make GoDaddy look good, and that's saying something. At least GoDaddy fleeces people with notice. 1and1 tries to trick and trap people.

Update: I posted a review on TrustPilot yesterday (thanks AneaKr)

They commented on my review saying someone will contact me. They called me this morning and around lunch time I received an email saying there's a "redemption period" where I'm still able to own the domain and whatnot (But my domain is up for auction?) I don't know. I want my domain but I just don't want to register with them.

Thought of a few options:

Ask if I could have my domain back then wait a week or so then transfer it out? (How hard is it to transfer to another registrar?)

Or ask if they could release the domain to the public so I can register it elsewhere and offer to edit my review in return. Lol

Any other suggestions?

I have one suggestion for you. It helped with my fiasco (several months and hundreds of dollars of illegitimate charges to my credit card later).

- Post a review on TrustPilot. File a complaint with Better Business Bureau. A manager finally got back to me and refunded me $120 for the past year, and canceled my account, just because they didn't want the truth out there. It's the only chance: just fuss a whole lot in a public arena and try to get them to see it.

I would suggest renewing with them then transferring it out. It has the least risk other than having to deal with them for a little while longer. Transferring is dead simple, it just has a few minor steps. Basically, you have to unlock the domain, generate a code, initiate a transfer at the new registrar (I highly recommend NameCheap), enter in the code you generated at your current registrar and wait for the transfer to complete.

I'm currently using them for my blog. I thought they were great until I started getting lots of traffic. 6 second load times are not acceptable. I tried upgrading to a higher performance level and it did absolutely nothing. I would also not recommend them, unfortunately, I'm afraid of losing all my website data, domain, and such so I do not want to cancel.

Yeah I did this too. Namecheap is cool. just $9 for a transfer. Was 10.69 but i found a coupon. Anything to get away from 1 and 1.

Well no, unlike you i didn't let them know they sucked. I needed to move to a better host. The secret is doing it 2 months before your domain expires and just go to your potential new domain provider and say "transfer domain to us". Then from there it's all very easy.

In case it's already expired like yours, pay their dumb 14$ (i think) to renew, and go to your new host and follow same steps. Worst case scenario, it'd set u back 20/30$ (renewing on both ends) but worth it. I have 10 sites on 1and1. My bad. Didn't know. I've moved 4. Slow, but soon!

Update: They reinstated my account, waived my domain fee for the year, now I just need to wait 60 days to transfer this domain away from them LOL

I still wonder how they manage to stay in business. Ever since i had a bad experience with them i avoid any 99 cent service offer. That goes for 99 cent hosting, 99 cent domain and all that sham. Always go for a reputable provider even if its costs you more upfront.

I made a mistake when i registered to 1and1 for getting cheap domain... i stopped using 1and1 for 10 months and my domain expired...but they still want some money,..They emailed me that i have bills left to pay! LOL what the hell? I bought domain..which is already expired..then how would i have extra bills to pay ?

I have a question. I used to buy domains from GoDaddy first year for .99c and transfer after first year. But now they don't have that promo. 1and1 has it and I registered few domains with them. Now I see alot of people experience problems with them. Any particular transfer culprits? Any input is appreciated. Thank you!
P.S. they called me and upsold freaking hosting for 11.99 for a year... Sucker alert
P.P.S. After first year I transfer to Namecheap. Never had any issue with them. Really good company highly recommend!
