Re-writing meta descriptions for 500 articles would be a pain in the neck... I'd rather spend that time on adding new content with better descriptions.

Even though description plays a little role in SEO, changing 500 descriptions just for the sake of SEO would not be worth it... there are better things to do :)

But like I said in the original post, a good title and description is what affects your SERP CTR a big deal. Even if you rank #1 for a great keyword, no one would click your site on the search result page if it doesn't grab their attention. So you might wanna consider that too.

AIO SEO plugin has an option to use 'templates' for description for all posts/pages... I'm sure with a little brainstorming, you could come up with a nice template to have for all pages/posts on your site.

A BHW member runs this site and its pretty handy to check keyword density.

From my tests, meta description still has an affect on your SEO... Even though some SEO gurus say it doesn't, but I'd rather believe the results I got from testing myself than some rumors from gurus. To each his own :)

Too much advertisements / bad site structure / bad HTML / bad content = no good.

And your site may get ranked high for a day or two even with no backlinks at all but 99% of the time it will drop. It is always good to start backlinking your site as soon as it goes live. Start very slow and increase the link velocity gradually.
 
Does this apply to new sites or old sites that have been penalized? What wordpress theme do you use?

only thing I disagree with is keyword density. As long as you have quality content and good backlinks, you can still have a 2-5% density and be fine.

haven't built those a single backlink and they each have a density average of 4%.
 
Great post...But I find it funny how this thread blew up 5x quicker than my thread on SEO saying the exact same thing if not more...
 
Make sure you write the meta descriptions for visitors and not Google.
Good meta descriptions are crusial to attract visitors from the SERP and more visitors means more people visiting your site and some natural linkbuilding.

2 weeks is pretty normal for dancing... expect it to dance a lot more than that.
My sites usually dance for 2 weeks - 2 months depending on how competitive the keyword is and how aggressive I go about backlinking.
This, for example, has been dancing hard for ~15 days and is still doing so..

The best thing to do while your site is dancing is to take a chill pill and relax until in stabilizes.
