Hey All,

The other main EMD thread looks to have gone rather off-topic. I thought it might be beneficial to just pool data into one place and see if a trend emerges, rather than having (another) discussion/bitching/whinging thread about how our lives are over.

What I've noticed at this stage, is that it's pretty inconsistent - similar to the discrepancies Penguin had in the early days. e.g. it almost seems that my sites were penalised, not just "re-ranked" according to an algo change

Domain 1: kw1-kw2-kw3.com.au
Previous Rank: 11
New Rank: oblivion
Content Quality: hand written, good quality, small site
Link Building: diverse anchor text, nothing sus
AdSense: no
GA: no
WMT: no

Domain 2: kw1kw2.net
Previous Rank: 3
New Rank: oblivion
Content Quality: cheap crappy stuff
Link Building: Next to none
AdSense: yes
GA: yes
WMT: no

Domain 3: [word]kw1kw2.com.au (not EMD exactly, actually a biz name)
Previous Rank: Top 10s
New Rank: oblivion
Content Quality: high quality (actual biz)
Link Building: next to none
AdSense: no
GA: yes
WMT: yes

Domain 4: kw1kw2kw3kw4.com.au
Previous Rank: 2
New Rank: oblivion
Content Quality: a one pager, but hand written content
Link Building: balanced, nothing new in recent months
AdSense: no
GA: yes
WMT: yes

I honestly believe things will settle down in the coming weeks, and there's not actually a penalty being applied. But for now, it might be beneficial to share some insights for the analytical ones amongst us.

As much as I'd love to believe that, I've learned that Google is a cold-hearted entity. They get us to rely on them for our financial future, then take everything away. All our hard work, dedicated time, and perseverance... Gone.

If you think about it I'm AMAZED that google ever gave EMD's such an advantage to start with. They pretty much ASKED people to take advantage. Strange they changed their minds...

I'm just speculating based on my experiences with Penguin. To me, it seemed they turned down the dial on Penguin after about a month of it going live...

Or perhaps, the initial change has a significant ripple in rankings and it settles down naturally over a month or two?

Either way, it's still certainly "early days" and I expect the landscape to continue to change over the next few weeks.

Completely agree with you. It was certainly an overweighted factor in my eyes, especially as IMers turned EMDs into mostly spam sites.

The thing I'm more shocked about is it's effect on legitimate sites. Like Domain #3 above, it's a legitimate business - no different to your average Joe, and he's gone.

I just checked out rankings for an EMD I nearly bought for 5 digits about 3 months ago... Glad I didn't, it's dropped 5-7 places on all the juicy keywords and THAT is a major authority website. Lots of fresh, quality content.

I think much like Penguin and Panda... the dust needs to settle for us to actually take stock of what the damages are. Google are a bunch of useless c*cksucking geeks who's super hot trophy wives are probably being fcked by the pool guy whilst these wankers dream up algo changes to implement on their next update.

Nailed that last part xD
