www vs. no www have an impact on your website's SEO, and what do search engines prefer?

It doesn't impact SEO at all. Search Engines have no preference, they treat both of them the same. I go with non-www these days, in the past I did www. Unless you are using an expired domain that had a www/non-www version that you'd want to stick to, it really won't matter. Even then you could just setup a simple redirect and use either.

The only real use for www today would be to indicate that your url (example.com) is a website (www.example.com) to people who may not be that tech savvy in advertising material and such. This might come handy if your TLD is more obscure (example.rocks) because it will let people know that your website is a website and not some incorrectly formatted text.

www vs. no www can affect SEO, but it's not a war. Search engines have no strong preference. Focus on consistency. Pick one and stick with it. Redirect the other to avoid duplication. Your content matters more than the prefix.
