So I was in the parking lot at the Home Depot and I found a small purse wallet type thing on the ground and I picked it up. There was quite a bit of cash inside. I took it to the info desk and turned it in, leaving all the contents intact. The thing that bothers me is that I actually considered keeping the money. Although I didn't, it still bothers me that I thought about it . wtf is wrong with me?

    You're completely mentally fucked up.
Better turn yourself in before you kill someone.

I think it would pass through anyones head that's normal in my opinion but what matters is that you did the right thing and handed it in.

There are people who get a purse like that and never return it... whether you think you did anything wrong in returning it or not, you can sleep better in the nights than them. :)

I thought my moral compass was better than that I guess having to scramble for cash for so long (4 kids + ex wife = no money) has skewed it a bit. Fuck it I'm over it . Time to go make some cash. sorry for the whining

You have a severe case of a disease called being normal.

You probably made a nice gift to the info desk people :) Handing it to the police is a safer bet to have it returned.

When i saw this thread, read the title and the first line, I was expecting to read a story about someone that took the cash out and trew the purse away and feeling guilty afterwards.

I was not expecting this honestly. IMO its normal to think about taking it, if you ask me this will go through everybody's mind. But there is no reason for you to ask yourself what is wrong with you for having that thought..

i've seen/heard of cases where people returned lost items and were accused of taking them in the first place. one guy got several years (this was on "60 minutes" in the 90s) and then later sued the cops for $50,000.

Friend, when the money begins to roll in your life, it will come to stay and make you+your family very happy. It's positive Karma; you'll get something much better, worthwhile, stable, and valuable xxx times more than the money you returned.

After you do a real great deed, be determined never to worry over it, because the rewards shall most definitely come in most unexpected ways! :)

May be, that deed has already killed your misfortune...

All nice girls you looked at were wet all over if you just ignored your brain. But you didn't. That's brave.

Let me tell you a story:

Two monks were making a pilgrimage to venerate the relics of a great Saint. During the course of their journey, they came to a river where they met a beautiful young woman -- an apparently worldly creature, dressed in expensive finery and with her hair done up in the latest fashion. She was afraid of the current and afraid of ruining her lovely clothing, so asked the brothers if they might carry her across the river.

The younger and more exacting of the brothers was offended at the very idea and turned away with an attitude of disgust. The older brother didn't hesitate, and quickly picked the woman up on his shoulders, carried her across the river, and set her down on the other side. She thanked him and went on her way, and the brother waded back through the waters.

The monks resumed their walk, the older one in perfect equanimity and enjoying the beautiful countryside, while the younger one grew more and more brooding and distracted, so much so that he could keep his silence no longer and suddenly burst out, "Brother, we are taught to avoid contact with women, and there you were, not just touching a woman, but carrying her on your shoulders!"

The older monk looked at the younger with a loving, pitiful smile and said, "Brother, I set her down on the other side of the river; you are still carrying her."

Whatever is gone is gone no point thinking about it. As Johnnie Walker always says "Keep Walking"

Last Christmas I found a bank envelope in the bank's parking lot with 1,000 in hundred dollar bills. I picked it up and put it in my pocket and walked to my car and drove away. When I got home I opened the envelope and saw it was stuffed with money. I then drove back to the bank and turned the money in, while a lady was giving a teller hell b/c she was claiming she did not receive her withdraw earlier. When I mentioned I had found some money they were able to verify it was her's and she had actually received it but obviously dropped it in the parking lot. The lady was very happy I returned the money and gave me a $100 for returning it. I have to admit I considered keeping it too but I'm glad I did not. I did have my 10 yo son with me to witness everything and I know the lesson he learned from this is way more valuable than a grand. You did the right thing and don't beat yourself up for being a human.
