Would ebay allow this?

I was reading that if the winner of your auction backs out of the transaction you can open an "unpaid item" case to resolve the issue. That seems like it would be a cumbersome process, so as an alternative, I we wondering if they would let you offer the item to the next highest bidder for the price they bid for the item.

I don't see a definitive answer on the ebay website, and I don't really want to ask them since it might cause them to "monitor" me.

If anyone knows, I'd appreciate knowing the answer.

Yep, you sure can. It's called "second chance offer". It will be on your options drop down next to your completed listing in My eBay.

You really need to open an "unpaid item" if you want to get your eBay final selling fee back...otherwise you are going to end up paying twice.

Also, the second chance offer is made at the bidders highest bid and not the final bid of the winner (hope that makes sense!!) - ACTUALLY, YOU SEEM TO HAVE GOT THAT ALREADY READING YOUR POST!!

Finally, if you only have one item then you may be on dodgy ground until the "unpaid item" dispute has been resolved. If the winner subsequently pays then you should post them the item.

My approach would be to open the dispute and email the second highest bidder to see if they are still interested in purchasing the item.

As usual, nothing is simple for eBay sellers!!

eBay now offers a feature called Unpaid Item Assistant, which automates the opening and closing of non-paying bidder claims.. Once you activate it, if a buyer has not paid within 4 (or whatever you set it to..) days it opens a case and they contact the buyer to request payment... if the buyer still hasn't paid after 4 days (or whatever it's set to), the case is automatically closed and the buyer gets a strike on their account, and you get your fees refunded.

I would caution against relisting an item or offering a second chance offer while this process is going on, unless you have multiple items for sale, as there's always a good chance that the buyer will change their mind and pay for it after all.
