Title says it all really.

If I had a webspace e.g. harvard.edu/orphan/hi.html linking to my money site would it still provide a SERP boost. Keep it mind no other links on the harvard.edu website link to it. However there are some external links to it so it is frequently indexed by Google. Its also very contextual if that matters.

Any thoughts welcome.

I would guess yes--while of course Google will not make a mention of it officially, I believe they do place a higher emphasis on .edu and .gov links.

Any page linking out to you would be good, you could use it as your tier 1 and link to the page from other sites.

I would think so, its in a domain with good authority.

Even if it is not a direct boost it would be an additional aspect to the backlinking infrastructure that you are building for your site and that, in itself, has a certain value.

Yes it will, this will be from high authority site and google looks for quality instead of quantity

Thank you for the replies everyone, not sure my point about it being an orphan page has been fully understood or taken into consideration by some of the respondees though. Has anyone ever had a killer like from an orphan page and seen a serp move because of it? Good point about the additional structure. More variety the better :-)

Orphan pages are no better than any "decent" Tier 1 link...

So with that use it as a pumper site. If it's currently not doing anything then juice it up with some spam or PBN links...

Good Luck
