Since you're in the top 30 for a few of the keywords, you aren't penalized or in the sandbox. A few factors will play into getting traffic and moving these keywords up in the rankings.
1) The competition
Take a realistic look at the top 3 for each keyword. How many backlinks do they have, age, stength of backlinks, etc... Market Samurai can do this for you or you can install a browser addon seoquake.
2)The popularity of the keyword
Even if you get to the top 3 you'll need know how much traffic they will send you for the exact phrase, not a broad phrase. Typically the number 1 spot gets about 56% of the clicks. Anyhing below 3rd only gets ~2%. So if you can't rank in the top 3 for a targeted keyword, I wouldn't even try it. Find another one. Now if the keyword only gets 1000 searches per month and you were ranked 1st you can only expect 560 visitors per month from that keyword. Consider what sort of work will it require to get to 1st
3)The OCI of the keyword.
Some keywords aren't buying keywords. Such as "free facebook guides" . It may be a great keyword with lots of traffic and little competition but chances are you aren't going to sell them anything. Market Samurai did have this feature in it when I used it months ago but it was buggy then.
Code:
So a good commercial keyword with little competition that has a good amount of traffic is what you're after. Picking the wrong keyword can totally mess up a campaign from the start. Underestimating your competition can really mess you up too.
Take for instance this keyword: (not exact stats)
"buy red widgets"
monthly searches on adwords: 1600
CPC (if monetizing with adsense): 1.29
OCI (more for clickbank): 85%
Competition:
1st: 1200 total backlinks, PR2, one year old
2nd: 50 total backlinks, PR4, 3 years old
3rd: 120 total backlinks, PR0, one year old
Typically sites that rank like this will be easy to compete with. The oldest site in second position is ousted of 1st by a one year old site. Usually means you can beat them with some backlinks.
So how much can you expect to make on this keyword and is it worth going after?
at 1600 per month, if you rank 1st, then you will get 896 visitors. Of those 896 on adsense, if you get a 6% CTR at the highest CPC you can earn 69.35. If you are going to use clickbank to monetize you can change the formula up a bit. The gist is know how much traffic you can get and how much is the keyword worth. Targeting a keyword that has lots of competition may mean you'll spend lots of time only to get to the second page and never really get any clicks.[/QUOTE]
Can you get all this information from Market Samurai?
Please tell me what tools and resources I need to search keywords, competition, etc. I know this is real basic stuff for most of you, but I don't know it.
