I just thought I would share what happened to me recently when an app I use left a comment on a wordpress site that had a "recent comments" widget.

~4800 no-follow backlinks! All from one comment that says something like "thanks LINK".
The first day I got 700, and it took me by surprise. Then 1.5k the next day, then 300 and it kept going like that for a week. I've since dropped off the list so they should start disappearing. No sweat as they are no-follow. There are only the most recent 3 comments on the widget. I'm not quite sure how to use this to my advantage - anyone?

Maybe this can be a warning about having it on your own site. You might end up with thousands of links to spammy sites just with this little widget if you have a large site.

yeah,it happened to me as well,i didnt had 700 spam comments but certainly my site also recived 30-40 spam comments everyday and hardly 1 legit comment

footprint for finding this widget?

Just "Recent Comments" - although this was in dutch or similar.

This wasn't just posts and pages - he had a hell of a lot of tag and category archive pages that were duplicating the content.

I think you didn't understand my post or else your just getting your post count up.

Hi OP,

Why don't you kindly remove the Widget?
Anyhow, thanks for warning us :)

Reduce spam bots by adding Wangguard and Cookies for Comments plugins. Akismet should be activated by default in Wordpress.

It's not my page. I wouldn't use it on one of my sites.
I was just surprised when my links went from about 200 to 5k, and if they were do-follow I can see it screwing up someone's anchor ratio, but I guess it wouldn't last too long anyway.

If you re-read my post it was my spam bot that was responsible :)

Just ahrefs. Making sure I click through to new links, do-follow so I get some good data before I get kicked off for more than 5 requests.

switch commenting system to disqus or some other kind of plugin, that needs you to be logged in to comment
