Wordpress vs Custom CMS for Authority Site

One last thing, if you are building a huge site I would forget about Wordpress too, it's not a CMS it's a glorified blogging platform. More than likely you are going to need a CCK which leaves you with Joomla or Drupal realistically.

I'm definitely more comfortable with WP, but I was told it would be a pain to silo it.

Yeah. Silo-ing a WP theme is hard BUT there are actually themes that are ready for silo-ing and just requires a bit of customizations.

ok, so there has been a ton of valuable input, but what do I ultimately go with that is: SEO friendly and is able to have an e commerce section later on?

I suggest you to go for a wordpress site. Wordpress sites are more user-friendly and customizable. Also wordpress sites are easy to handle. So I think wordpress site will be the best option for you.

Wordpress with the woo-commerce plugin.

Go for Wordpress.

In Custom CMS you will bounded to take help from your personal developer. And in that way he will be your master and you will have to go according to him.

Using Wordpress is easy, you can take WP Help from any developer who is good.

still undecided, so many different opinions

Depends on the expected daily traffic. Wordpress out of a box performs really bad if traffic is higher than 5000/day.

I had the same confusion between wp and html. ( I really do not understand the real difference between them.)
Tried both of them, html pages looks very nice and you have more control on how the page look like but takes time. WP is totally the opposite.
In my case, WP sites ranks and easy to post new content and organize the whole site. So, I am using WP since and making money.

I use a custom and is pretty good so far, lots of traffic but it is optimized pretty good

Custom CMS is really expensive and require a longer develpment process. If you need to need to build a simple site or blog don't waste your money on Custom CMS.

The answer to the question is this.

How much creative customization are you planning on doing?

Reason I'm saying this... if you have a ton of custom advanced SEO functionality you're going to want included in your site, maybe WP isn't the way to go. However if you are going for a basic functionality stand alone site... knock yourself out. Wordpress all the way.

What are the pros?
What are the cons?
Which one should I go with if budget is not an issue?

Thanks in advance!

whatever it takes to rank the site, i'm planning to make it an e commerce store

So outsourcing everything? That sounds like WP type I would go for.

It's cheaper to find someone to maintain for you since the user base is generally greater than any other custom CMS.

If you have unlimited budget. Then, develop Custom CMS and get pros points.
