www usually just indicate its a "cloud-enabled" application/website, making it easier to move to another server if one have a hardware failure, is being DDOS'ed or whatever.
That's also why most big sites use it, like Google, facebook, wikipedia, etc.
(Just to clarify, adding www wont automaticly do that, its something your host has to support and usually in that case you dont have an option not to have "www" in your url)
Edit: Also it should have no effect on SEO or ranking
